Opel Reportedly Developing €10,000 Entry Level Car

Following the withdrawal of Chevrolet from the European market, Opel has plans to introduce a new entry level model positioned below the Corsa and Adam, according to German motoring magazine Auto Motor Und Sport.

The new model will ride on a global small car platform from General Motors and will have four doors and four seats. The exact sticker price is not known, but is expected to be less than €10,000, which is incredibly frugal.

As the Chevrolet brand is responsible for selling affordable, entry level models in Europe, such as the Spark, this new Opel model is rumored to be a compensation for the brands departure from the market. The new small car is expected to go on sale sometime in late 2015 to early 2016. It is not yet clear if this is the same car that will join the Insignia and Zafira on the production line in Russelheim, but that could be the case.

  1. I’d kind of guessed there would be a replacement Agila because A segment Adam is upmarket, as I am guessing B segment Corsa will be. Also GM already has Agila so the market is obviously important to them (the £8,500 to £11,000 price range) plus a car to suit different tastes/lifestyles that’s different to Adam. I’m also not surprised GM want to fill the void that will be left by the Spark & wouldn’t be surprised if it’s based around this model, nor would I be surprised if a electric model was offered as GM considered it for Adam & already have Spark EV.

  2. There is no coherence between the Chevy withdrawal and this new entry-level car. This car was still announced in an interview with Thomas Sedran last year and must be in developement for at least two or three years if this car will enter the market in 2015.

I can’t also imagine that a car for less than 10.000 € will be built in Germany as Germany is a high-wage country. I suppose that this additional car for Rüsselsheim plant will be the next generation Opel Antara…

  3. Yes it would have to be built at a low cost . I was kind of wondering its a 4 seater, 4 door which is what the original Agila was maybe GM are thinking retro design similar to the first Agila

“Auto Motor Und Sport” reported that it will have four seats and four doors. I don’t think that this car will look like the current Agila which wasn’t very successfull. I think that such a car will look much more like VW up!, Toyota Aygo…

  5. Say hello to Opel Eva 🙂

  6. Joking apart Eva works for many reasons, it rimes with Adam, it sounds like Viva, Not too many models beginning with A, it finishes with A as was usually the case with many models (Corsa, Astra, Insignia etc)

  7. “The German” claims that “Germany is a high-wage country.”

The highly acclaimed “reforms” of German labor law since the Helmut Schmidt chancelorship, and especially the “Hartz-reforms” under chancellor Schredder have turned Germany into a low wage country.

One fifth of Germany’s population lives in poverty, a recently published statistic revealed.
    Germany is today Europe’s poor-house.

  8. And also, still commenting “The German”, robots don’t get wages.

Building a car is more and more automated. And where manual interference is needed, the qualification and experience of the worker is more important than her or his wage.

    Just my 2 cents…
