SEMA 2013: Chevrolet Camaro V6 Performance Concept Is For The Track Enthusiast

For a while now, there has been strong demand from Chevrolet Camaro V6 owners and enthusiasts for a rival of sorts to the Ford Mustang V6 Performance Package. Luckily thanks to Chevrolet Accessories, owners can create their own V6 track star a-la-carte, with warranty-backed brake and suspension kit offerings from the manufacturer. To get a grasp as to what we’re talking about, Chevrolet brought a Camaro V6 Performance Concept to SEMA 2013, showing what any V6 Camaro owner can do. The concept includes:

  • Brembo brake kit from the Camaro SS
  • Camaro 1LE suspension kit
  • Camaro 1LE strut tower brace
  • Borla performance exhaust system
  • 20-inch black wheels (45th anniversary design).

The car wears 2014 Camaro Z/28 rear upper control arms (!), which are being evaluated for the Chevrolet Performance catalog. Notably, a ZL1 brake package is also available, though isn’t featured on the show car. Yes, you can purchase ZL1 brakes and have them installed on your Camaro V6.

Exterior and interior appearance accessories lend a more athletic aesthetic to this more-capable Camaro. The exterior features a Chevrolet Accessories grille, front splitter and rear spoiler, along with “Chevrolet Performance” graphics. Inside, it is ready for the road course or street, with:

  • Chevrolet Accessories premium carpet floor mats
  • Chevrolet Accessories ambient lighting kit
  • Black trim bezels
  • Kicker 200-Watt subwoofer and 200-Watt DSP amp available for MyLink
  • RECARO performance seats
  • Flat-bottom performance steering wheel
  • Chevrolet Performance sill plates
  • Chevrolet Performance armrest
  • Chevrolet Accessories auxiliary gauge package
  • Instrument panel and door inserts wrapped with carbon-fiber weave
  • Door armrests and instrument panel inserts trimmed with black suede and Light Stone stitching
  • Chevrolet Accessories pedal kit
  • Chevrolet Accessories engine cover

While you can’t exactly check the box for a 1LE package for a Camaro V6 configurator (yet), Chevrolet dealerships will be able to order the parts here and have them installed.

  1. Don’t worry, I bet it will be super cheap

  2. It had better be a lot cheaper than the SS or it will never sell.

A low price is all that will bring anyone to the V6 model in this gen. It is a great car with good power but for just a little more the V8 can be had and is hard to pass up.

I see more special packages for the Alpha as GM needs to more smaller engine cars.

    1. This will be the V6 analogue to the 1LE “track pack”, which itself is reflected in the Mustang V6 performance package and GT/V8 track pack.

As it relates to cost: at $25,855, the 1LT is $7,000 less expensive than the 1SS at $33,055.

$7,000 isn’t just “a little more”, especially for those who buy this car for its looks/image and not for the performance attributes (roughly half of all Camaro buyers).

  3. Yes the 1 LT is $7,000 less than a base SS but how much is this performance package on top of that $26K?

The Hot Wheels package 20″ wheels and Tires alone took a big chunk of the $7,000 additional option price.

The Hot Wheels package with the LT2 and V6 were as much as a decent SS V8.

Also you discount the fact that most Camaro’s are V8 and part of the image is the rumble sound of the V8 as is the status of owning a V8.

The bottom line is if they produce a car like this with all the performance bits less the V8 it will be much more than a Base SS with the V8.

As hard as they have tried the Camaro demographic is just still struggling for more V6 sales and the problem is a package like this will be a low volume car just as the V6 Mustang track pack car has been.

I am glad they are looking at it but I just don’t see it doing much in sales.

You want to sell move V6 cars find a way to appeal to the female demographic more with a car that is easier to see out of when driving. The 6th Gen will address this.

  4. This is just a rediculous set of sentences, tat really don’t make sense. The Camaro isn’t struggling for sales in any category, It sells better than the competition. They are dominating V8 sales, which makes a big chunk of money for the company. Base model 6cyl don’t make huge margin. If anything, they are looking to add margin to the V6, not volume. Chevy didn’t bring out this package for people who want a performance v6, it is made for the people who have a V6, and want to upgrade it. Some people honestly prefer the V6 to the 8. Especially those who are into performance, but aren’t into spending the money.

    Reality check:
    2011 CAMARO BUILD VOLUMES – S. SETTLEMIRE

    POWERTRAIN VOLUMES:
    3.6L SIDI DOHC 312 HP V6 LTT 64,917
    6.2L SFI V8 w/Active Fuel Mgmt 400 HP (SS) L99 27,977
    6.2L SFI V8 w/o Active Fuel Mgmt 426HP (SS) LS3 14,093

And to take it one step further, here is more proof why there is such a calling for V6 parts. THERE ARE MORE V6 CAMAROS THAN V8. Almost every make and model of car is like this where they sell more base than upper trim levels.

“find a way to appeal to the female demographic more”
This is just plain dumb. Females don’t hop in a car and say, “I can’t see out of it.” In fact, plenty of men bitch about that.

    1. I will accept your numbers based on Scott.

At one time I though the V8 sales were translating to 70+ V8 but I can not find where I saw that one or what year. I thought it was 2010.

I do wish the performance parts sales were there as we sell more Camaro performance parts than anyone but the sales for them are no where near the V8. I deal in the performance aftermarket and while there are some parts offered few people bite on them.

I know when GM went to the 5th gen they were hoping to gain about 70-75% V6 sales.

As for the Female sales much of them have always migrated to the Mustang in the past as it was a more up right car that was easier to get in and out of and much easier to see out of. This was a problem identified by GM.

As for not seeing out of while men do not like blind spots most will still buy the car and that is not so with many women. Women are more practical in what they buy and men tend to be more tolerant of these issues.

  5. I have a 2010 v6 camaro synergy green edition. I liked the performance but considering i drive 120 miles a day to go and come from wrk this was a practical wrk/play car for me. I added bbk lt headers, elimi cats, x pipe, vararam ram air intake, and a borla cat back. So it picks up nice now. I just need a tune. Considering i normally get rite around 30 mpg n ride to wrk in style this was the perfect car for me

  6. I bought a 2015 Camaro RS and later had a dealer install Brembo brakes and the 1LE package. It’s fast enough for me. It is a daily driver and I don’t have to buy super unleaded and it gets 30 MPG on the highway. I average about 19 MPG in rush hour traffic to and from work. When I want to have a little fun, the car handles marvelously.
