GM Looks To Develop ‘Black Hole’ Medium Duty Truck

Having revealed that the next-generation D2XX-based Chevy Cruze hatch will be available in North America, President of GM North America Mark Reuss spilled some more juicy product info to Forbes, revealing GM’s plans for a new heavy-duty truck positioned somewhere between a heavy-duty pickup and medium-duty commercial truck.

Ever since GM pulled out of the medium-duty truck segment amidst the company’s 2009 bankruptcy, there has been speculation of the automaker re-entering the segment to fill the void. The upcoming truck, referred to by Reuss as a “black hole truck,” wouldn’t be as large as a medium duty vehicle, but would rather be a stronger Silverado 3500 meant to compete with the Ford F-450, possibly being called Silverado 4500.

Now for some proud self-flattery… you heard it here first… years ago.

  3. Yes, finally another variant to narrow the gap between the f series and iilverado. He should also consider making a new Chevy kodiak/ GMC topkick (with civilian versions of course) and class 7-8 semi trucks just for the sake of having a foot in every single segment

  4. Very interesting! It seems that the ‘Black Hole’ truck has been an on again-off again program. As GMAuthority’s original report stated that plans for such a truck were dropped for something similar to the GMT-560 Kodiak/Topkick. Now I wonder if there is not a larger medium/heavy follow-on to the ‘Black Hole’ truck off in the future.

  5. Better be serious about the black hole truck. GM was a real industry of its own years ago. They sold off so many fantastic divisions. The 3500 of today, is even last place in its class with ford and ram continually upping their numbers.

  8. Over a year and still nothing. No hint anything is under development, no spy shots of prototypes, no official word from GM such a truck is even being considered.
