Chevrolet Suspends Orders On 2014 Camaro ZL1, 1LE Models

General Motors is reportedly pausing orders of the Chevrolet 2014 Camaro ZL1 and 1LE for a period of three months. The report cites the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar warm-weather tire model as the reason for the temporary halt in orders scheduled to begin on November 21st and last through February 11th (we like to think because not everybody lives in Arizona, Florida, or California). Camaro ZL1 and 1LE models produced through December, however, will arrive in showrooms as scheduled.
I saw a 2014 Camaro Z/28 the other day here in Oklahoma by the highway. Its absolute presence winded me as I witnessed it pull into the gas station, preventing further conversation with my father in his ‘Vette. I couldn’t believe my eyes, even with my contacts in. But there it was, in all its glory, massive 305mm 10-5 spoke wheels at all four corners, carbon fiber ground panels, glistening Summit White paint, telephone taillights and angry, vicious lower front grille.
I didn’t like “Steve” at first when I examined only the pictures on my computer monitor, but I withdraw my false assumptions. I am beholden to this car, I am in love.
It is a beautiful vehicle. We can’t help who we fall in love with sometimes.
Not buying this excuse. GM has sold other cars with Summer only performance tires year round including the ZL1 and 1LE before.
Could they be setting the stage for the Z/28 to be more available over the others?
scott – Working at a Chevrolet dealership, this is by no means an excuse to halt production. In Michigan at least, the temperature typically reaches well below freezing in the winter months. When this happens the rubber compound freezes in the Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. Unfortunately when the Camaro’s sit long enough and are moved, 4″-6″ splits or cuts will generate, making the tires non functional. At over $300 / tire, $1200 for the set of 4 I’m sure this is something GM does not want to continue to pay for. Just thought you should know. As far as the Z/28 goes, we have still not received word on allocation which is a bummer.
The continual use of extremely low profile and unfit for anything except summer tires for high performance cars seems like GM (and other manufacturers) are “stuck on stupid.” I have owned 6 Corvettes, the latest being a 2014 with the Z51 package. I do not race the car. Yet I am stuck with “summer” performance tires. And they are run flat tires as well. What otherwise is a perfect car is diminished by being equipped – customer has no choice – with summer tires. Customers should be given at least two choices, possibly more as to the type of tire that their car is equipped with. If lawyers are driving the decision for the manufacturer, have the customers sign an appropriately worded statement when they buy the car, absolving the car manufacturer of any liability associated with tire design, function or failure.
I am well aware of the Goodyears and the winter as I live in Akron Ohio and have several people who work at Goodyear in my family.
On the converse if the reason you gave is true then GM would only stop shipping to the cold states and not the warm climates where they could still move product.
Many of these cars are also ordered so the cars get to the dealer and are moved out in a day or so. The few people I know with ZL1’s ordered them just the way they wanted them and not of the lots.
The tire issue could easily be worked around if they really wanted too.
want to hear something even more stupid than this? I walked into my dealership with money in hand to order a new 1LE and was told they could not order one because they had already ordered one for this year and were only allocated one a year. we want to know why general motors is bankrumpt. They won’t let their dealer sell cars that they have customers for.
