Popular Mechanics Honors GM Super Cruise Technology

In case you don’t know what “Super Cruise” is all about, it’s not an LS7-powered Chevy Cruze that we dream about at night. It’s actually quite a bit different.

Super Cruise is capable of allowing semi-automated driving in GM models to come. Odds are that Cadillac would be the first brand to see this sort of thing. Some of the things that it offers are: hands-off lane following, and limited braking and speed control. The system is designed to work on freeways, in bumper-to-bumper traffic and on long road trips. Is it autopilot? No, but it’s as close as we’re going to get for the time being.

Popular Mechanics named Cadillac’s semi-autonomous driving technology as a recipient of their “Breakthrough Award,” which recognizes innovators and products capable of doing things we don’t quite understand. The fields of study that are recognized are generally technology, medicine, space exploration, automotive design, and brewing beer.

If you’d like to pick up a hard copy of PM issue featuring the award, it will be available on October 15th.

  1. So, when are we going to see a car that brews a fine lager. That’s what I want to know… 🙂

Seriously though, I just hope that the people who will end of using the semi-automatic driving, don’t become too dependent upon it.

  2. The reality is these items are a prelude to the coming of the autonomous car.

There will be a time in the future people will lose the ability to drive their cars and will just set it to were they want to go and just ride.

The technology is here and it is just a matter of time to implement it.

I find it sad and disturbing as anyone who loves to drive.

  3. I just can’t wait to give up my fire breathing Corvette for an electric powered autonomous people mover. I guess I will be able to watch more TV while I’m waiting to be delivered to my destination. Just kill me know……….Oh Wait! They’re planning that too.

  4. GM is really starting to bug me. They keep announcing all sorts of new vehicles and innovations and they are not producing them. About time the build what they have. Waiting and waiting for an extended cab Silverado is pretty lame. Waiting and waiting for a Colorado is also pretty lame.
