2014 Chevrolet Silverado, 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 6.2L V8 Rated At 15 MPG City, 21 Highway

The 6.2L EcoTec3 L86 V8 engine launching now as an optional powertrain for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is a beast of a motor, at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque — the strongest in its class currently. The tradeoff, of course, is that it’s thirstier than the 355 horse, 385 lb-ft 5.3L V8, but not by much, as we’ve found out with official EPA mileage figures released today.

Specifically, the EPA estimates for the 6.2L K2xx trucks are rated at 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway for 2wd models, and an incrementally lesser 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway for the 4wd models. Compared to the other big engines offered by Ford and Ram, the gas mileage of the new 2014 GM 6.2L trucks is at the top, while providing significantly more power.

  1. Wow.. That is impressive, more impressive than any other engine option out there.. Ecoboost what? I won’t be surprised this engine would be more efficient than the 3.5TT in work conditions.

  2. I can’t believe the 6.2L V8 is more powerful and gets the same fuel economy as the F-150 Ecoboost V6! Hurry up GM and get those 10 speed transmissions here already! Meanwhile, I think that these should be the GM engines used for their best sellers. .. .

  3. I only wish they would bring this as an option to the lower LT models with the 5.3 as standard.. That way people could see GM’s powerhouse better without having to shed 40,000-45,000+ on a top end truck.. Ram done the same with its 5.7 Hemi, and Ford does it with their 3.5TT..

  4. AHEM!! This is EPA “Estimated” mileage figures. You only get these numbers in real life if your first and last names end with a “z,” it’s the sixth Friday of the month, and your driving down Pike’s Peak with no brakes.

  5. Agree. In reality, I expect trucks that have this engine and are readily available in dealer inventory will be $50K+. Simply well beyond the grasp of most.

    Many use CAFE as an excuse why they won’t/can’t offer this engine in other lower end models? Sorry, not buying that as an excuse. It could be offered as special order only in a limited capacity on lower trim trucks and have zero effect on CAFE. A customer who desires the top engine could get it , if they were willing to wait? Some folks don’t want thousands and thousands of dollars worth of creature comforts in their truck.

Out local GMC dealer had a new truck show last night with some gm bigwigs there to show off and explain the new trucks and I got to run the bag off a few of them, and take some fast bumpy roads through some corners,quite impressed with the overall truck, super quiet and the 5.3 had good power, even squealed the tires with 4 people in them and the traction control on, the 6.2 would be a monster motor in one of these, i want a reg cab shortbox 4×4 with a 6.2, probably can’t get that option. they started at $42.500 and went over 50 here in canada. the DENALI will be lots, nicest truck i ever drove !

  8. I know it’s EPA but every vehicle I’ve owned at some point got better MPG than advertised. My 2004 GMC 1500 with the 5.3L 4×4 got 19 mpg going 80mph with about 700lbs of gear across Montana and got 18 mpg on a other trips (EPA says it gets 18 hwy). Also my beater car constantly would get 27-29 mpg when it was rated at 26 mpg. Finally my parent’s trailblazer 4×4 could get 20-21 mpg where it’s rated at 19 mpg. So maybe I’m that lucky person your talking about.
