2014 Chevrolet Malibu Offers Hands Free Texting

The available Chevrolet Mylink infotainment system for the 2014 Malibu will allow smartphone and iPhone users to send and receive texts through voice commands, a first for the midsize sedan segment.

Mylink’s Text-to-Voice feature converts received texts to speech, playing them through the audio system and allowing users to reply with a preset group of messages. For example “I’m driving right now, Ill get back to you later.” Users can create and save their own messages when the vehicle is in park.

Not all phones are compatible, and depending on whether or not you have and Android or an Apple product will determine how the system works. For instance, Apple iPhone 4S users have to integrate Siri into the system, and use voice commands through Siri to send text messages, though Siri can also check on things like box scores, and stock prices on the fly.

  2. A system like this really is the lesser of two evils. On one hand, it still takes concentration to speak out a text and have your car send it (especially if the system is glitchy and requires multiple tries), but on the other hand, hands-free texting is less dangerous than hands-on texting. Also, I didn’t know that GM had integrated Siri into the Malibu, as I only recall it being compatible with the Spark and Sonic.

    1. I agree, on one hand you want people to only pay attention to driving, on the other, if they are going to do it, you might as well provide them with the safest way to do so.
