Reuss: “Something Big” Coming To LA Auto Show

General Motors North American President Mark Reuss hinted to Motor Trend that — beyond the 2015 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups — that there’s something else from GM that’s set to debut. It’s being described as a “linchpin” for Chevrolet, but will also transcend brands. Sounds like a new approach to vehicle platforms to us. Will it be similar to Volkswagen AG’s modular MQB platform — a uniform architecture for its transverse, front-engine, front-wheel drive automobiles? Nobody is really sure. Regardless, look for something that’s more than just a vehicle to be announced at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

  1. So are they talking about platform for compacts??? because that’s what the MQB platform is….

  2. I just hope this is something market changing for everyone.

GM has made a lot of very good models of late but I have been hoping to see them do something that will make the entire market react and try to match. This would be the statement GM has really needed since coming out of the bail out.

I have considered Marks words carefully and even in GM speak he has not said enough to really tell what is going to come. I just hope it is something that catches even the non GM fans attention.

  3. A new hybrid concept based off of the P S A compressed air system. This would pay for the investment and transform the industry.

  4. I expect to read about new EREV models as a follow up on the Volt, including a larger sedan, a CUV, and maybe a truck. GM spent billions on EREV technology, and it is the best step to get American customers away from gas with electric drive, but keep the range extender for longer trips.

  5. Start-Stop system for all models. He said it would aid towards future regulatory needs, plus there has been talk of the start-stop system on the latest Corvette, the new Malibu has it, and all models sold in Europe are getting it.

This would be a GM exclusive, increase gas mileage across the board by 15% (city), have a relatively low cost for implementation and fit in with the all new engines coming.

Side Note: I have wondered why GM does not make the start-stop system standard along with E-85 capability, as both are low cost ways to help them achieve EPA goals along with open up more marketing opportunity without much cost (less than the typical $1000 rebate).

    1. For comparison;
Malibu Eco – 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway
      2014 Malibu with start-stop – 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway

  6. “Something big” would be a big Chevrolet pickup, “transcending brands” by having a GMC twin.

    1. Seems to me as these are already on the market they don’t count, other than the HD model of THE SAME TRUCK is not anything NEW. I’m wondering about voltec or something platform-wise that could be used as a starting point for other products in the other GM divisions.

  7. Himm Just a guess but how about a Chevy truck with the Voltech system? If priced right it would be a game changer in the N American market.

  8. The Canyon and Colorado? A brand new Pontiac lineup????????? God that would be awesome!! What could it be? The Volt 2.0? Start/Stop System? A new Equinox/Terrain/Anthem? New Cadillac’s?

    1. My guess is something green and cheaper than Volt forbuse at Chevy and Buick.
This is in addition to the truck showing. Again, the PSA air system is the inly reason G M wanted the 7% stock and it is probably a G M patent by now.
(I wish this pertained to Pontiac but both Chevy SS and Caddy have picked up that slack.

    2. Pontiac is dead and will remain dead so let it go.

But it is LA and it will be something to do with green and efficiency in some way. GM always promotes the Green stuff at LA.

  10. I’m scared it will be something dumb like the effort to make all cars hot spots. Reuss and Co have a history of hits as well as misses. An electric truck will fail. The segment will never be green.
An electric GMC Granite would be hot, though.

    1. Just like the failure of a Turbo V6 F150? I recall many saying no one will buy it let alone pay $1100 more over the V8.

The Hot Spot thing is coming anyways and is not any surprise.

      1. Hot Spot sucks; will be obsolete within 2 years. Will just be dandy on used cars!
G M would have been better off striking a deal with the major tablet makers for plug in devices sold via dealerships. They could have even used a no name company, madebthem both auto and personal devices that a customer could detach and take in doors.

  11. I am now thinking a Opel Monza drive line in a Chevy based prototype.

GM will not just use this in one show car in one place.

    1. GM showed the Buick Riviera Concept” at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year.

Look up the above linked GMauthority article and all the other linked from there, and see the similarities.

These brother concept cars show how GM steers Buick, Opel and Vauxhall to federate as a “hybrid global brand”.

Before already, GM ended all badge-engineering between Opel and Chevrolet, except for the electric vehicles Opel Ampera and Chevrolet Volt.
