Lets just hope the Gold does not go to hell like so many other Chevys over the last 10-15 years.
I hope they have better suppliers.
I also hope that GM has had the common sense to specify a series of specifications for the bow tie (and the rest of its logos) that the supplier can build to in order to prevent the weathering effects. That, or maybe it should just start to engineer and manufacture these components itself and have complete control over its quality/inputs (ahem, VW).
Should the emblem age slower then the rest of the car? After 6 or 7 years parts all over the car show some wear and weather!
GM pre Chapter 11 has supplier issues as they would get the cheapest price on some items and the emblem was one of them. Things like steering columns etc. were not as noticeable as they are not seen and they were less common. The emblem though is a symbol of the company and represent the company. To have it go to hell just sends a poor signal.
To bring items fully in house was once done. It is very expensive and few companies do it anymore.
You do not have to do the in house deal and just hold the supplier to the standards set. If they fail they are responsible for the warranty cost involved. These deals can and should be made at the start.
The other option is that to make a emblem that would eliminate the problem in design or materials used.
As for aging keep in mind these emblems on some of these cars were failing in 6 months not 6 years. Sine fade is acceptable but not complete cosmetic failure. Companies need to protect their images and name.
The Chevy bow ties from what I could see often failed due to car washes with strong detergents. Also washer fluid on rear windows in SUV’s. They were not sealed and the liquids would seep in around the edge and damage the gold.
I think they have it fixed today and it was the old GM system that took too long to address it.
If you want to make quality of GM’s parts better I’m all for it, but focusing on the emblem is a waste of time!
People may not be able to see all the parts underneath the car, but they are way more important then a emblem!
You need to learn even if the car is 100% right it is not good that the symbol of your company looks like crap.
The first thing you need to do on any car is protect the image and symbol of your company.
Look at the HHR’s still on the road and Cobalt’s, they all look in pretty good condition and no rust. But cheap emblems and poor grill chrome can kill a car. Most HHR’s have bad emblems and stained chrome. This gives a bad image to anyone looking at the car.
Sure a Chevy guy will not care but a guy driving another make will see poor quality and take a vehicle off the list. Same goes for paint or even poor quality wheels. anything that visually seen on the outside needs to be of good quality or it detracts.
Details count.
Put a suit on a beggar and he will get a seat in the best restaurant. Put rags on Bill Gates and he would not be let in the door. Visual images create impressions fair or not.
To run company you must consider all impressions not just your own. Work smarter not harder.
I have never met anyone who was going to buy a used car and said I like the car it’s a really good deal but that emblem makes it a deal breaker!
As for the rims, this is one area of a car that I personally could care less about and most tuners or people that mod thier cars won’t even bad a eye at them! Why you might ask?
Cuz stock rims are just that for 99% of cars, unless it’s a car that will be collectable otherwise tires and rims are sold and replaced with sexier lighter bigger tires and rims for better performance!
As for the suit, I’d rather be dressed like bill Gates a bum and have a huge wallet then have a expensive suit and flat broke!
You really have no clue to what I said.
My point is not your personal opinion. My point is a stock car on the road that has visual defects is a turn off to anyone who may consider buying one. The worst thing to be defective is the symbol of your company.
Goodyear tire has had a motto that has been around for over 100 years and it still fits all companies today. Protect Our Good Name.
We even has some cheap plate frames for our company and I put in to step up the quality as the name and American flag faded. It put a bad image on our good name. We have fixed it with a new supplier. We do not sell a lot of them but every one of them went bad and it is not a good reflection on all our other products. besides you get them out the to advertise and if they can’t read it why bother.
Presentation is key to any product or for most successful people. I too would rather have jeans and a billion but most people have to dress the part to earn the money little of it comes easy. In the real business world you can garner more respect and credibility if you look the part. I hate ties as much as anyone but I know there are places and times where it will gain you more than you would looking like a bum. Not every place is Google.
Even your best movie stars with out make up would not appeal to most. I have seen enough before and after and it is amazing some are the same person.
Read Bob Lutz Book on Icons and Idiots and you will learn much on the auto industry and how things work or do not work in the business world. I recommend this to anyone who has any interest in the auto industry.
Look I have a financial advisor and he takes care of millions of dollars everyday, if you saw him on the street you wouldn’t think he could keep track of 5 bucks! He dresses like a bum do I care no cuz he is the best at dealing with money!
When it comes to cars, you can focus on crap that matters to a very small portion of the buying public, what matters to most is the fit and finish of the car itself, how was it put together, does it rattle, does it perform and handle, is it comfortable to drive!
If a emblem keeps you from buying a car then you have your priorities out of wack!
Btw cops comes on at 9pm I’ll be watching
Still no clue.
No matter if it is the emblem or large chunks of pain falling off presentation is key to any product.
It is good your accountant can live on his one reputation as most people and product need to stand out to be accepted or even checked out.
Note this is big picture deal. You focus just on the small example I give but you need to look at the big picture. This could be an emblem or any other part of the car that detracts from the image of quality. It may be a great car but if it looks like hell in any area that visually can be seen it give and leave a poor impression. I only use the emblem as it is for an example as the Bow Tie reflects not just on the model but even the whole division.
A pretty girl gets more dates than one with just a good personality. Not PC but true.
BTW love cops!
Paint jobs emblems and decals are good until the car doesn’t run!
Tell me what kills a cars or car company faster bad paint or bad reliability?
People scream alot louder when thier car doesn’t run compared to a cosmetic problem!
You can take your pretty emblem and paint I’ll take the rest of the car we’ll see who gets farther!
The problem with this is you have to have gotten them to buy the car before they complain it does not run.
If they are turned off by the poor quality visually if it ran or not matters little to them since they would not buy it anyways.
Not running has not been a common or big issue for years.
Go on the non enthiusiast web sites like for the HHR, Equilnox or even the Malibu and really take a look at the small petty things to us people are complaining about. Winkles in seats and other small issues add up to unhappy customer.
Right now they are complaining on the missing filler panel on the rear seat in the back when folded. GM cut it out since they broke often. The platform is being replaced in a year so they went with out it. If you had not seen a 2013 or earlier you would never notice it but those who have are and are complaining that they believe GM has lowered quality. Petty yes but a factor in the eyes of the buyers.
Too often the little things bite you in the ass as the big things are no longer an issue today. A big issue can sink a model fast.
Well if those little things keep you up at night then that’s your problem I sleep just fine! I do own a new malibu! 99 problems but that ant one of them
I sleep just fine but it is little things that car companies are working hard on now to control and prevent. These things add up and give poor impressions of quality.
Just like the people who think everything from China is crap. Yet they fail to understand the I phone and Galaxy phones they love and reviver are all made there.
They had a show the other day that they dressed a guy up like a reporter with a camera crew. He was asking people what they thought about the government admitting the moon landing was faked. These people all fell for it and thought this was true. They then asked why did they think this was true after being told it was not. They all said the guy looked real and they just got the impression that he was legit.
Same thing for cosmetic flaws on cars or just poor trim and even design.
Bob Lutz on the last Impala said the designer when he arrived was going to remove the trim from the window frames because he was a little over budget with them. Lutz asked him is it not more appealing with them? Yes! Does it not look of better quality vs. a painted window surround? Yes! Then he told the guy would we sell more cars with them than with out? Yes. Then put them on. Would you rather get in trouble for doing something a little over budget and selling more cars vs. the car on budget and failing due to the lack of appeal.
As for the Malibu it has other issues to deal with right now. Will see how the small changes on the new one may help sales. Again it is the details.
Some day you will learn.
I’ve learned not to listen to irrelevant people like you
Believe what you want have fun being wrong
All I can say is you comments speak for themselves.
I note that may can tell who has a clue and who does not.
Like I said read up in some of the good books that are out there and you will learn how things really are, I would start with the recent Lutz book Icons and Idiots as it details many auto leaders and the things they did right and wrong and gives a good inside view of how things have to be at times.
He gives a great analysis on why we need accountants and car people in a car company. He shows how each along would destroy a company. I recommend the chapter on Red Polling on this. Also read the chapter on Lee Iacocca for more on details. great perspectives are given here.
