Video: HSV GTS vs. FPV Falcon R-Spec: Who Wins?

We’ve never been to Australia, but from what we’ve heard, the rivalry between the Holden Commodore HSV GTS and the Ford Falcon FPV is akin to what we see between the Ford Mustang and the Chevy Camaro here in the United States. But with four doors, and steering wheels on the wrong side of the car. Nevertheless…

To compare, the HSV GTS is the most powerful series production vehicle ever built in Australia and features a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 making a whopping 576 hp and 545 lb-ft of torque. The Falcon, meanwhile, sports a 5.0 liter supercharged V8 churning out 449 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, and the R-Spec is a rather recent addition to the FPV line.

Find out for yourself if the power disparity is at all a factor in driving both high-performance sedans in the real world, courtesy of Motoring, and the video below.

  1. European magazines such as Autocar typically give top scores to Ford for chassis feedback. So it is doubly rewarding that this reviewer rates the Holden’s electrical power steering over the Falcon’s hydraulic system. Somehow GM needs to figure out how to maintain Holden and keep those Aussie engineers in business because they have consistently produced designs at a fraction of the typical GM developments costs. Name a better mainstream V6/V8 sedan anywhere. You have to spend eye-popping prestige brand prices to get similar hardware.

  3. The 6.2 litre supercharged LSA comes from the Camaro ZL1. Not the Corvette ZR1 as stated in this video.
Apart from that, good review. It would be nice to compare both cars on dry roads and tracks.

It’s been said for a while that Ford/FPV has understated its power claim for the GT.
People suggest that 335kw is more like 300kw+ at the wheels. So if that’s true, it wouldn’t be that far behind the HSV in power. But it can’t match the GTS So its mute point.
The VF is at least 2 generations better than the FG Falcon in any way you care to mention. Driving the GT, you can never get the driving position to feel right as the the seat and steering wheel adjustment feel like an after thought. Why the engineers haven’t fixed this when owners have been complaining about this issue since the BA falcon is very strange. Anyway, it’s gonna be a sad day once Holden stop producing a rear wheel drive vehicles.
It’s too bad, the VF coupe with GTS running gear would have been one tough car.

    1. Why are people using kw when the article clearly uses hp?

Can we just rid the world of any and all ford products? The world would be so much better!

      1. Hi Brian,

The vehicles in the article are Australian and in Australia, kilowatts (kw) are the primary measurement system. GM Authority being a United States based site converted the figures to HP for the primary readers. Comments using kilowatts are by people in countries who primarily use this measurement system or those who prefer it whether its because of the nationality of the vehicles or personal choice.

  4. Its in kilowatt and newtons because the US is probably the only country that does not use the metric system!!

  5. My car is making lots of kw’s or my car is making lot’s of HP?

KW’s is just stupid, when you think of pulling power you think of horses! When you think of kw you think of a eletric motor and you first think it’s a electric car not a high hp v8

Cars that have gas or diesel engine’s should have HP not kw!

  6. Watts aren’t just for measuring electricity, a watt is a measurement of power that measures a rate of conversion or transfer

  7. I understand this but tell me what sounds better? KW’s or horse power

    1. In my opinion, kilowatts sounds more like power and energy where horse power sounds a bit medieval.
