Opel Adds More Options, LPG Motor To Adam

Opel is adding a 1.4 Liquid Petroleum Gas ecoFLEX powerplant to the Adam engine lineup, marking the tenth LPG model in the brand’s portfolio. The bi-fuel setup can also run solely on gasoline.

To make the bi-fuel Opel-Vauxhall Adam possible, engineers reinforced the valves and valve seats, and placed the 35 liter LPG tank under the vehicle floor in the rear, without sacrificing storage capacity. When utilizing just LPG, the Adam is capable of covering around 500 kilometers (310 miles) in the combined cycle. Combined with the added range of the gas tank, up to 1,200 km (745 mi) is possible in bi-fuel mode.

Meanwhile, several new hues have been added to the Adam’s color palette. Mahogany Brown and Arden Blue will be new primary exterior colors, while Limelight Green will be a secondary roof color.

  1. That makes the Adam interesting. With a range of 1’200 km one can go from Berlin to Paris without stopping once at a gas station. And with the engine being bi-valent, one can go anywhere without fearing to be completely lost when no LPG station is in sight.

Plus, here in Germany, LPG costs much, much less than regular petrol.

  2. What other LPG cars do Vauxhall have, back around 2000 they had Astra, Vectra & Omega although I don’t think any are on sale in the current range

  3. Insignia joins Adam with LPG, wonder if it will be introduced across the range. Is the lady filling up the Adam using the same as she would if filling up with petrol? Shurly it has to go into a seperate tank. Also in theory using petrol & LPG a Adam could go from Manchester to Berlin without stopping for fuel once.

    1. Sure, there are separate tanks for petrol and for LPG. From the press release: Thanks to the space-saving installation of the LPG tank under the vehicle floor in the rear, full luggage compartment capacity is also preserved. The additional LPG tank holds up to 35 liters.

Question: Is the lady filling up the Adam using the same as she would if filling up with petrol?

I’m not sure if I understand the question correctly. Does this quote from the August 22 press release answer it? The filler neck for the liquefied gas is directly next to the gasoline filler neck and Opel includes the adapter to enable filling up across Europe.

According to another press release (which mainly reports that the public gas station acress the entry to the Opel plant in Rüsselsheim added an LPG source, and is thus only available in German), LPG is available on 10 Opel cars:

      • Corsa (three- and five doors)
      • Astra (5 door hatch, and combi)
      • Meriva
      • Zafiara Tourer
      • Insignia (sedan, hatch, combi)

  4. Where can we find a list with all the Opel vechicles on CNG/LPG?
Do all Opel LGP/GLP engines have reinforced valves and valve seats?

  5. I think LPG and CNG availability varies by country of destination. I tried various countries via the “Choose your country” drop down menu from http://www.opel.com. But maybe the info is hidden somewhere deeper in the menus.

But at least at the German side there are two liss of LPG and CNG cars. Here you find the LPG ones:
    http://www.opel.de/fahrzeuge/alternative-antriebe/lpg/models_lpg.html
While all the describing text is in German, you will find from the vehicle name and engine, either a 1.2 liter engine in the Corsa, or 1.4 liter engines in the other models, Astra, Insignia, Meriva and Zafira. Although LPG has been announced for the Adam, the Adam is not yet in that list. LPG is not necessarily available with all body styles. Relatively high up on that page you will find in black on a yellow arrow “Alternative Antriebe” and to the right of it the choice of LPG and CNG. Hitting “CNG”, and you will get the list of two cars available with a CNG engine, namely Zafira Tourer and the light commercial vehicle Combo.
