GM Chief of Global Design Ed Welburn did a bit of a show-and-tell with Jay Leno, explaining the inspiration behind the Cadillac Elmiraj Concept as well as the ins and outs of the car. Although the video was shot at Pebble Beach, where there are many beautiful cars from all corners of the world, we’re sure that the concept received its fair share of extra attention, not only because it was unveiled there, but because…
Sorry, I lost my train of thought after looking at it. We hope you’ll do the same. Watch:

Is it me or is it really hard to take Jay seriously, I dont know that I have ever taken him seriously as a comedian or a car collector (although he has one heck of a collection). These videos seem like theyre shoot from the hip, oh look Ed dropped in with another cool car and I havent really done my homework so lets roll with it oh and I cant help but to interupt Ed at least 3 or 4 times. Anyway, this might just be me. That car is so stunning and so Cadillac…
I didn’t like it when Ed was interrupted as I knew he had damn good explanations about the design and direction of the Elmiraj. I would have loved to have heard Ed drop little tidbits and hints about the birth and development of the Elmiraj and what it says about the health of GM and it’s design teams.
…and not particularly from Jay who just had to mention the Biturbo in what seemed like a completely unrelated and spontaneous manner.
Do I care about the clock in a 20 year old heap? No, I care about what kinds of work Ed and co. had to do to make glass, plastic, wood, aluminum, leather, and light work together during the creation of this concept.
Exactly, let the expert tell the story… Ha the whole clock thing killed me, who cares allready.., Whew glad Im not the only one…
I have to agree with Yaba on that one. He seems to just kinda wing all of his videos leaving viewers wanting more. It is truly a beautiful car though. Oh and Jay… of course the A pillars are slimmer on that car…its a concept. For production im sure they would grow in size, and a B pillar will be required as well for safety (remember the Camaro concept?)
Jay is ok. He is a true and real car guy.
you have to consider many of these video’s are done on the fly and are totally unscripted. People know they can get web time and stop by un announced or with short notice and do these video’s.
Note Jay is always dressed in the same cloths. This is because they never know what or who they may have in and when, He keeps a closet of these same shirts and pants there do they can do things on the fly and then edit it all together.
We have and still do some things with Jay at work and there is no one nicer around. He is just a guy hanging out in his garage like anyone of us and in doing unscripted things some just come out better than others.
I like Ed too but he also has some dry presentations too.
“I like Ed too but he also has some dry presentations too.”
Considering that during a presentation he has to make the world of industrial design seem palatable and interesting to people outside the field, the dry and academic air of it does come with the territory; I can forgive Ed for that. It requires the listener to do some lifting on their part to understand the how and why of a concept. It comes off as being stuffy and boring, but it’s how you describe the design that a concept takes on.
ID is an art, but to the average joe, they don’t see it as an art (moreover, it’s just fancy/sexy sheet metal). Welburn tried to break it down and make it digestible, but Leno kept cutting him off.
Ed is from the corporate world and is not a marketing guy. He is well spoken and that is better than many in the industry.
If they all spoke out like Lutz they would not have gotten to where they are.
Some interviews work and some don’t this was the latter, Like I said many of these are het stop over after taping the show and we will so a quick video. No retakes no scripts and just do it on the fly.
We do work with Leno and his crew and this is not a pro studio and production deal. It is just a car guy doing quick one off interviews for the web. It is not Barry Maguire where he piles on the make up and does retakes when they are not happy. It is crazy how much make up they put on Barry.
I am wondering if Jay once he leaves The Tonight Show may go into bigger productions at the Big Dog Garage.
I like leno cuz he’s a real car guy, but I would have a lot more respect for him if he was only a GM lover or fan!
Or just a ford fan!
People that pick and choose from make to make show me that they have no soul or back bone to make a stand and pick one and stick with it! It’s to easy to bounce around!
You have little soul if you listen to the same song and read the same book over and over. I am a GM car guy through and through I read and appreciate cars of all kinds and MFG.
Jay has a dream place to where he can experience and enjoy automotive history and diversity with every drive.
A lot of value can be had with an open mind toward cars. Also a lot can also be learned.
If you look most GM top designers and leaders all owned makes and models from other brands. Many restored many classics too just as Jay.
Harley Earls best work was often copied or taken from some of the greats in Europe.
Do you feel the same way when you see a guy who is a cowboy fan one day and a giants fan the next?
That act is looked down up on but for some reason when it comes to cars people seem to lose their minds!
Your either a GM fan or your not!
Just like your either a Cowboys fan or not
This is not the NFL.
The automotive world is a canvas and has many works of art out there. If you choose only one painter to appreciate you will miss out on a whole world of enjoyment.
You may not be a Da Vinci fan but that does not mean you can see something in his work to appreciate or learn.
The love of cars is not a exhibition or competition so please no wagering.
A closed mind never fulfills all it can hold Grasshopper.
You can be a fan of the sport of football in general but you can still be a Fan of one team.
Don’t tell me about loyalty here as I have been a life long Browns fan. Talk about back bone I got enough for me, you and 14 other people. It is going to be another long year. At least I also am a lifer of Ohio State too so that removes some pain. LOL!
The auto world is a canvas of art! That’s laughable! We now live in this world where society has made it easy for people to just bounce around and not hammer down thier flag and say this is what I stand for!
Could you imagine if you were getting married and part of your vows were I will love you as long as nothing better comes along! Or if a parent said that to thier kids?
We would think those people were horrible! But for some reason people can go from one car to the next and feel no shame!
Sad! There were days when men and women were chevy ford or dodge people, and they took pride it being that way and keeping it that way!
That’s when men were men!
All I can say is wow!
Anyone else read that? LOL!
Truth hurts don’t it! You know that being a man thing
No, it’s the fact that you’re trying your damnest to equate car ownership with the social mechanics of a tribal civilization from 10,000 years ago.
“Oh! That Ford tribe is unlike us! They believe in grabber blue and not hugger orange! We must enslave them and take their wives as war booty, for we are the choose race”.
It’s your attitude and woefully distorted perception of the auto industry that would make you a great war-monger. As long as you can find one tiny insignificant non-issue to illustrate the difference between two things, you’ll inflate the whole thing into binary conflict for no damn good reason.
And the last thing this world needs is more people needlessly fighting over diametrically opposed NON-ISSUES. The car brands you like and the NFL team your cheer for ARE non-issues.
“There’s only brand A, and if you diagree, YOU’RE NOT A MAN AND YOU HAVE NO BACKBONE AND SOUL AND YOU PROBABLY LIKE AN NFL TEAM I DON’T LIKE AND I HATE YOU FOR EVER LIKING ANYTHING THAT I DON’T LIKE”
That’s is what how you come off as.
And then you have the gall to entwine the values of masculinity into your mess, as if it was going to help your argument.
If I may, a real man knows when to listen to reason and make rational decision based on the given state of the world around him. He never proclaims absolute knowledge, because the second his absolutism is shown to be wrong, he is no longer a man.
You, ritter, are not a man. No matter what you’ve done, where you’ve gone, or where you are; none of those things have made you anything close to a man. It’s what you’ve allowed into your head and how you’ve left it unchecked that has prevented you from being a man. You’ve chosen not to filter and sift though the world as you see it and have decided that it was too much work (laziness). You’ve felt it would be better to shut your mind off from opposing and different ideas, and never explore the world as it stands before you.
A mind that is too open doesn’t learn what’s important and needed. A mind that is too closed doesn’t know anything new or creative.
A filtered mind overcomes both these problems. Let new ideas in, filter out the junk, noncreative, and unscientific, and repeat.
Grawdaddy
Nicely put! Plus one at you.
I hardly noticed jay Leno or ed welburn with that gorgeous car around!! I have no idea how much of that car may make it into a real vehicle one day, but I hope a lot of the elements do. The way it all comes together is amazing. I can’t wait to see what comes next!
Ok GM we’ve known for nearly 60 years that nobody makes a better show/concept car than the general. How bout we get this thing in the flesh!
I actually have hope now, from the new Camaro to the Chevy Spark, GM has had a good track record as of late which concept to street incarnations. BUT that’s only been when they stated and promised that whet you see is what you’ll get. For the rest of the line up/brands its been standard GM teasing. Beautiful, awesome, dynamic, concept turns into a dull, also ran, “inspired by” street car.
Leaves me knotted up inside with anxiety towards which way they will go.
