General Motors is installing a more permanent Global Powertrain chief with former Delphi Powertrain Systems president Steve Kiefer, who will take the reins from Jim Lanzon — the interim powertrain chief after the firing of Sam Winegarden over the Chevrolet Tavera emissions scandal in India.

GM’s new head of global powertrain operations Steven Kiefer.
Kiefer — whose appointment is effective September 1 and whose official title will be Vice President, Global Powertrain — will report to Mary Barra, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development & Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. Meanwhile, Lanzon will settle into the role of Vice President, Powertrain Global Transmissions, reporting to Kiefer.
Kiefer holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University (Sparty on!), where he also studied engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Michigan.
