Shanghai OnStar, GM’s China-market telematics joint venture with SAIC, has announced that it has reached 600,000 subscribers in China. The accomplishment makes Shanghai OnStar the largest provider of telematics services in China. The service has grown from 500,000 subscribers to 600,000 in nine months.
“Shanghai OnStar is committed to providing comprehensive, reliable telematics service for Shanghai GM customers”, said Managing Director of Shanghai OnStar Diane Jurgens. “We are actively developing new functions, such as the My Vehicle Location mobile app, Camera Alert and Avoid Traffic, to ensure excellent service for our subscribers.”
The GM Authority Take
Congratulations to Shanghai OnStar for its efforts and continued growth in The Land of the Red Dragon. That said, it seems that a growth of 100,000 new subscribers a month in China, a market where The General sells over 250,000 new OnStar-equipped vehicles a month, seems rather low. In that regard, we’ve reached out to GM for comment on how it counts the OnStar subscriber base as seen above, and what the comparable subscriber numbers are in the United States and/or North America.
