Consumer Reports Loves The Chevrolet Impala

GM enthusiasts, and even domestic car enthusiasts as a whole, feel that Consumer Reports has a certain bias toward Japanese cars. So it’s nice to see a change of pace, and see the publication give praise to the 2014 Chevrolet Impala, which scored 95 points out of 100 in its evaluations — the highest of any American car powered by gasoline. Only the Tesla Model S has scored higher, with a near-perfect 99 out of 100 points.

In addition to being the top-ranked full-size sedan in its class, the all-new Impala is also the first American car to top its full-size sedan rankings in 20 years. Here’s to more upset victories by Chevy.

  1. Not surprised, when the great people at GM take the time to design and engineer a great product, you’d be amazed of the results

  2. Generally CR is one I take little stock in their opinions. Too often I have had to fix many of the great cars they recommended that do not fare well long term.

But if a good review like this helps the Impala more power to em.

I loved the Impala the first time I saw it and after I was in the first one last winter I was sold on how nice of a car it is. This is the real first new Chevy car under the new GM money. The Cruze, Malibu and Sonic were all started before the Chapter 11. This shows what the many changes Lutz brought in can do when they are properly funded.

The real thing that has helped the Impala is the investment by Cadillac in this platform. The refinement they brought in really shows in this car. We should see similar results in the Camaro as it will benefit by Cadillac’s investment in the Alpha. It may not be a Cadillac but it will be a much better Camaro as the platform will have more investment and refinement if it were just left to Chevy.

If GM can keep this pattern going it will help many cars in their line up. Buick should see more benefit here too in their Alpha.

  4. The present Impala is greatest GM has engineered and CR seems to thinks so. GM fought good and hard to earn the ratings, but they need to press onward and fight even harder.

GM cannot pat themselves on the back and call it a day. Everyone at GM should see Impala as being ‘not good enough’. Such a mentality and work ethic would drive GM and it’s engineers to create an Impala that’s worthy of an even higher CR rating.

But why stop there. GM has loads of other cars that need to lead in CR rating. Having one good show with the Impala isn’t enough.

    1. I’ve never been a real fan of the 3.6. I don’t know why, I just really dislike them.

    2. As long as there is a SS there will be no Impala SS.

Also a AWD TT would just hurt the XTS sales since they would be the same car.

Add to that the price of such an Impala would be even higher than the $40K price of the Impala LTZ and present SS.

GM has much more planned for the SS sedan as it will get a new platform in 2-3 years. Look for a lighter Alpha.

  7. Wow, even worthless CR has to acknowledge the greatness of the Impala. The car looks great on the road (it looks a little narrow though). They got the styling right from every angle.

  8. I’m glad I saw in in print because I’ve thought it for years. I cancelled my subscription to CR for that very reason and I told them so! I’ve always purchased a GM car for over 40 years and when I purchased my Chevy Cruze ECO in 2011 and saw the review they gave it, I said enough.
Have a 2013 Malibu and a 2000 Park Avenue since new!
I am in Florida right now on vacation and rented an ass kicking Camaro SS. Gotta love GM!

  10. I sure hope they didn’t confuse the Impala with the Malibu- they are the same width, same as the smaller Ford Fusion as well. How is the Impala a “full size” car? A Mustang is an inch wider, the Charger two inches wider, the Taurus a full THREE inches wider. I think this will ultimately hurt the Impala if people cross-shop other real full-size cars.

    1. It dimensions on the outside don’t necessarily matter it’s about interior space and how everything is packaged.

    2. A three dimensional universe, and you think a full-size car is determined by width.

Full-size cars aren’t categorized by width; length takes prescient. Never mind the length of the Impala relative to the Mustang and the Charger. As a rule, 5000mm and up is full-size.

      1. Well not really, when you are in full size car you “feel” the width of the interior, not the extra 10″ in the trunk. A Ford Focus has decent headroom & legroom, width is what you are paying for. My Mustang “feels” wide, now I know why- it is.

        1. Too bad you can’t quantify “feels”. Your eyes can deceive you, that’s why we can’t take your word for it no matter what you believe about the inside of your Mustang.

Length, width, and height of a car can be measured and compared against one another and thus lead towards comparable metrics of car classification. What you perceive by “feels” isn’t what true when is when you actually stop and measure the car; and not just in width.

Besides, consumers notice the increased legroom (provided by the longer length) sooner than how much hip room the rear passengers have. Hence, length takes precedent; even visually as people can see a difference in car length instead of width.

  11. Good news…lovely car….starting to upscale it like a Cadillac 🙂

  12. If you have not been in the car then you really have no idea.

Anyone who has been in the Taurus knows the dash and console take up so much room you feel like you are getting squeezed in.

The Impala is more open and has tons of front and rear leg room. If may be more narrow but it is packages so much better.

Once you get in you will understand.

  13. I’m not a fan of a lot of magazines because they cater to toyota, honda and other imports they praise them for their ugly designs & act like they cant ever do no wrong even though they very rarely give GM good & fair reviews they still leave the door open to sneak in a little criticism

  14. I just rented an Impala 2014 v6 as my jag was in an accident. I have to say I was stunned by the interior detail work much like a high end Mercedes with the lines and stitch-work, the back seat leg room and the trunk space amazing. I actually thought this had to have been a v8 as it flew on the high way and was like lightning in stop and go street. AMAZING CAR!!! Good job Chevy!!!???? The guys from the high end body shop were all out looking at the car and just couldn’t believe it. No I don’t work for Chevy.
