All-New Chevrolet Aveo/Sonic Delayed Until 2016

In the same report that revealed an all-new Chevrolet Spark launching by 2015, a South Korean union spokesperson also confirmed that an all-new Sonic (known as the Aveo in many markets outside North America), has been delayed by a year. Originally set to bow in 2015, the new subcompact is now scheduled for a 2016 launch. It’s not immediately clear why.

At the same time, recent reports have also indicated the delay of an all-new Chevrolet Cruze by a year, citing continued strong sales and engineering changes. As a result, expect an all-new Cruze by late 2015.

  1. My thoughts here are that these vehicles Cruze, Sonic and Spark are going to grow in stature (size) ever so slightly and because the global market is becoming even more competitive these vehicles will have to remain or evolve even more into world class vehicles. As they continue to refine the platforms lets hope it allows for diversity of product on a whole new competitive level that we have not been able to see here in the US. I think we have not even begun to see what GM is capable of. These vehicles really should bring a new light to the consumer ect… I hope we begin to see some teaser show cars pointing the direction.

  2. Also I think that GM finally has a recipe for success with these cars and the level of infotainment you get is excellent. The consumers are speaking and drawing in their friends. Someone may go in for a spark and drive off with a Cruze or vise versa, go in for a cruze and drive off with a loaded Sonic RS… I have to say the interior of the Sonic RS is stunning.

  3. GM has no clue how to design and market cheap econo boxes like Sonic and Spark, there is not even a trace of cuteness in these ghastly boxes on wheels. GM either needs to copy successes like Mini and Scion or just pull them off USA market permanently and concentrate on third world markets.

Whoever is in charge naming these things should be fired. Sonic reminding everyone of fast food chain and Spark, having Maelm brothers most likely already filing copyright suit against GM. Lack of originality in design is matched perfectly in naming convention GM uses.

    1. Since when is Scion a leading brand? And a Mini is more of a fashion item that buyers pay a premium for. If you followed the sales numbers, you’d see that both the Sonic and Spark are very strong in their segment, despite having minimal variety. Probably because GM didn’t take advice from you.

      1. Scion sets trends, look at FR-S if in doubt (what does GM have to counter that car?). If you followed the sales figures, you would realize that Fiat is quite a bit ahead of Chevy micro cars sales in this country which is pretty funny actually. I think you should follow sales figures with more attention. Now, unblock my IP which you have ghosted apparently in the name of freedom of speech.

        1. Scion is Toyota’s group of global models that attempts to set trends. Yes, there’s the FR-S… what else? It wouldn’t even exist if not for Subaru. The fact that the Fiat 500 is the segment leader is not the point here, and it doesn’t change the fact that the Chevy models are both strong in their sales figures — something Scion is not.

        2. “Scion sets trends, look at FR-S if in doubt ”

Really now? Toyo just killed planned turbo and convertible models of the FRS.

“deemed too expensive for their limited volumes””

Yeah, Scion reeeeaaallly sets trends. They can barely break 2000 units per month in the US, so the FRS isn’t scaring GM….ever. THAT’S how little of a trend setter the FRS is.

          Even more proof:

          1. Once again, you are oblivious to the USED CAR market and price used Scions command. There is not a single GM vehicle that can come close. Toyota uses common sense to make the cars more affordable without creating complicated pricing structure while the cars are not visually distinct enough. This is something GM needs to learn since it is painfully obvious in cars like Corvette. Oh and Scion Tc and Xb sell rather well last time I checked.

            1. Used Scions are setting trends…sure kid.

By the way, the tC and Xb aren’t doing too good despite your claims. In fact, the FR-S outsold the tC and the Xb last month.

Are you sure you’re not inflating the presence of Scion a bit too much? The FR-S, tC, and Xb are all getting outsold by the Spark. The Spark isn’t a sports car either, but if sales figures are to be believed, and not the used market, Scion isn’t setting trends anywhere.

    2. Awww is Booo having a bad day, is he having relapses of days long gone… Booo GM is bringing it and taking prisoners. Dont be deceived and stop being ignorant. Your Toyoburu experiment is nothing special and is showing its fruit or lack there of, Scion are you serious your joking right, that brand is almost extinct…

      1. Taking no prisoners is the phrase you most likely were looking for. Never been a great fan of imports, except for a Mini Cooper S, doubtful this will ever change. Considering the sagging economy, Scion is doing considerably better than Saturn did in the past. Remember that one? LOL

        2. 1998 sales. Saturn 187,804. Scion 83,739.

    3. Scion? Scion is teetering on the brink of collapse if anything, their sales are nothing to be proud of. The Chevy Cruze was the number one selling compact car last month and has had very strong numbers since it arrived. The Sonic and Spark are competitive in their segments as well, your points are baseless.

      1. Considering Scion is one of the least depreciating cars around, yeah, this is some collapse. The thing you somehow ignore is the fact GM cars sell is because they are popular with car rental companies. This is good for the GM but sucks for private buyers considering the depreciation of these cars. Car rental companies are loaded with Cruze and other hot sellers. Learn the hard way when you try to sell Sonic in a few years from now.

  4. I tend to want to chalk it up to lessons learned from the botched Malibu ordeal. They need to get it right the first time and this is why the delay.

    Reply
  5. Not it is not any lesson learned on the Malibu. They knew what they had in the Malibu and had to play the cards they held. The car was delayed because of the Chapter 11 as it was pretty much nailed down in 09 for 2011 as a 12. In the time delay they had the others moved on in this segment. GM delayed it a little more to up date is some but had to rush it out to beat the Fusion out.

The Fixes I am sure were in the works before it hit the market. They were pressed as they could not leave the old Bu out there any longer and they could wait for the updates or a new platform so they played what they had.

This here is a case where Lutz installed the thinking of if you have the ability to wait get it right before you put it out. The Cruze and Sonic both are selling well and have given GM the ability to put it off till they get it right. Lutz points this out in his book and Mark Ruess delayed the Cruze when it first came out as he was not happy on a few details.

Lutz delayed Lacrosse in 04 because it was so bad and the GP went through some styling changes. he was not totally happy as the hard points were set on the cars but they played the cards they could play there like the Malibu.

From here out there are no more left over projects and the new products that are post chapter 11 are showing it like the ATS, C7 and Impala. We will see more of this.

The way of doing business was changed at GM and it took some time to take affect but it is now working and the people there are holding to the path they were set on even after Bob left. His book points out the changes they have made and what he hoped they would do after he was gone. So far he should be happy.

  6. Great news that gm is taking the time to get there products to be segment leaders.

  7. I am a little puzzled here. The Sonic and Spark are relatively recent arrivals and as such should not be due for a major renewal in two to three years. The Corsa that was also supposed to be derived from the Sonic/Aveo platform has not yet materialized yet.

    1. They are new to North America but are not new elsewhere. They really are due like the Cruze in other makets for a replacement. But here they have a year or two to give.
