2014 GMC Terrain Gets A Few Changes: RPO Central

For the 2014 model year, General Motors is introducing several changes to the GMC Terrain.

For starters, the 2014 Terrain loses three colors (Onyx Black, Gray Green Metallic, Copper Red Metallic) while gaining one new one (Silver Sky Metallic). In addition, the Theta-based compact midsize tweener CUV does away with the Chrome & Technology Package, along with the Limited Production Option (LPO) chrome package, which is replaced by a regular factory chrome option. The front and rear floor mats are replaced with units containing separate RPOs for the front and the rear, and two new wheel designs replace two existing ones.

The changes are more numerous than what we see for the Terrain’s platform mate — the 2014 Equinox, but are generally similar.

  1. Someone within GM seems to have decided that color doesn’t matter much to customers. They are eliminating color choices.

It makes me wonder, especially as it pertains to vehicles like the new pickups. Chrysler has 12 regular colors, Ford has 11 — GM has 9. Why would you invest a billion dollars in a new line of pick ups and then skimp on the exterior colors?

Back when GM first introduced the GMT800 series, they had a dark blue metallic. They cancelled it in one of the subsequent years and replaced it with a bright blue metallic. Dealers, retail customers and fleet customers all balked. GM brought it back. It’s gone again of course. Must be a new crop of rookies at GM.

  2. I’ve been saying the seem thing for the longest time… Were’s the color at.. You look at dealer stock.. All you see is black.. Black on black … Even on the inside….black on black… I guess there color blinded…hahaha

    1. That totally depends on the dealer to order what they want, not GM. If dealer finds that they want trucks without trailer brakesi t’s because they either feel they don’t sell well or they’re trying to lower their selling point versus other dealers,

      1. Years ago, I always picked the medium gray interiors in my vehicles, not a big fan of the all black thing either. However, the gray and tan options that GM has been offering lately are both too light – they show stains/dirt too easily, and I think that’s why dealers stock that black the most. However, the black shows dust/lint/etc, more.

  3. Agreed, just bought a 2014 Sierra, that was my only gripe, no colors and black inside. Another gripe I have on the trucks, every SLT has a towing pkg. But try to find one with a trailer brake control, unless you special order one you have to take whatever the truck has on it. The brake control cost a whopping $230.00 extra.

    1. The blame for that goes internally to GM on how new options are made available and dealers/sales people are made aware. I know salesmen — good salesmen — who aren’t even aware of what options are available. The sell what the dealer orders — and the dealer orders what sold last time. That’s where it needs to be incorporated into the brochure for “pull” and announced to the dealers (“push”) strategies. Even make two trailer towing options — Z82 for the regular trailer towing, Z83 with integrated trailer brake controls.

There is a half ton snow plow prep package — basically a heavy duty service package — with an iron block 5.3 instead of the aluminum block 5.3 — that I would integrate into a HD trailering package with the trailer brake control too.

      1. I completely agree on the trailer brake thing – if I’m spending $40,000 on a new truck, I’m not going to hang an aftermarket controller below the dash. If they’re not going to make it standard, at least make it more commonly packaged with other options that someone who tows would get – axle ratio’s , camper mirror just to name two. Seems like another issue driven by the accountants – “If we can get $200 for a part that costs us $30, let’s make it a separate option.” Unfortunately, that missing option can cost a sale, or require more than $200 of incentives to move it off the lot at the end of the year.

  5. The colors here are not ones you see often or had much demand other than the black and they still offer another black.

GM has taken to offering generally colors that sell the best and cover most of the market and leave off the odd ball ones. they also interject new colors for a year or so to stimulate sales in some models such as the Hot Wheels Camaro or other models.

The fact is 75% of the cars on the road are black, white and silver with a sprinkling of other colors in between. The only color I always find puzzling is the blue that GM offers as so often it is not the best shade of blue and I feel it would do better if they offered a more appealing blue more often.

As for options Dealer pick and choose much of what they can sell or trade with other dealers as they only want to have product that moves. Option packages also offer them better deals on trucks with more equipment.

If you want something they can get it with a dealer trade 85% of the time. My last three cars were dealer trades to get just what I wanted. If that fails you can order one too. Waiting 4-6 weeks is worth it to get what you really want.

Too often people think that they are limited to what they see on the lot but you can buy nearly any thing at any dealer you want and they can bring it in.

My last car we made the deal on all the options I wanted and I did via email from work. I got my price and then we did a search and had one brought in from another dealer. I got my car at the price I wanted at the dealer I liked the next day.

    1. There is no argument that a small proportion of colors dominate sales. White has been the most popular color the last two years (according to one source) and silver and black also rank very high.

However, being competitive with Ford and Chrysler also means being competitive with things like colors. When there is a lot of plastic on the exterior that also needs to be color-keyed, as with cars, it gets more difficult to offer more colors as each material takes color a bit differently. However, with trucks, there is very little color-keyed material, so it’s generally just painting sheet metal. If the factories can handle the 11 colors that they paint vehicles now, why would you not offer a color palette of 11 colors? Why not be BETTER than the competition???

I can tell you for a fact sometimes options like electronic trailer brake control are not well represented in dealer inventory. If you don’t have salesmen or potential customers who know about it, or package it properly in the order guide, it doesn’t get ordered and stocked by a large numbers of dealers. Often, dealers re-order what they just sold.

There is also a large period of time after build out orders (usually end of March or early April) where a customer can’t even order a vehicle with that equipment.

BTW, I am a former District Sales Manager with both smaller rural and larger urban dealers.

  6. The deal on the colors is mostly that yes you can make them but if there are so little demand is it worth the effort or the dealers that get stuck with them on their lots. 49 flavors of Ice Cream are great but if you have to toss out the ripple prune cream because the two people who buy it only come in once a month make it impractical.

My beef with color is I they can offer 11 colors then why do they always seam to have 5-6 that anyone wants. Some of these weird colors are part of the issue. That Gray Green GMC killed was one when I first saw it you could tell it would be a poor mover. Note the dealer I bought mine from is left with 3 of them that have been there for a while.

As for the Sales no nothings that is where the dealers need to step up. But it has been an issue with most dealers of all brands for what 50-75-100 years now.

GM has had enough info on the web that the customer can know what all is available if they do a little home work as they should do anyways. I generally feel if you do not know as much or more than the salesman then you did not do enough work to learn what you are buying. If you are going to spend $25K or more you should damn well know what you are buying or you deserve what you get.

I know GM has tried to get dealers to cooperate more in all areas but too many still fight them. The fact is in some cases some dealers should be cut and GM can not do it due to the laws in place protecting the poor dealers. I have one near me that need cut off at the knees for it’s dishonest practices.

  7. Most people don’t purchase a Terrain to tow anything, especially the 4 cylinder. As for colors nine choices are sufficient and it seems the trend now is back to lighter colors such as white & silver.
