2014 GMC Sierra Conserves Fuel When You Don’t Need it, Creates Power When Duty Calls: Ad Break

The Hoover dam’s powerplant uses smartgrid technology to conserve energy when it can, and make more when needed. The GMC Sierra does the same, with its 5.3 Liter V8 L83 engine featuring direct injection, active fuel management, and variable valve timing — thereby making the powerplant the most fuel-efficient V8 in a pickup that beats Ford’s EcoBoost V6.

We like to call the Sierra’s ability to conserve fuel when power isn’t needed, and then create power when duty calls “power on demand”… but GMC calls it “Incredible thinking, in the form of a truck” — which is just as good. Watch for yourself, and appreciate the ad’s stunning backdrop:

  1. OMG, I hope it’s not using “V8-6-4” technology!

    1. They should come out with a new and reliable version of the V8-6-4 engine. You could choose how many cylinders you wanted to get the best fuel efficiency or the most power. . . .

    2. GM’s 5.3l trucks have used “active fuel management” variable displacement technology for a long time. The new 5.3l also uses it.

      “ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT:

General Motors’ name for their proprietary automobile variable displacement technology. Active Fuel Management allows a V8 engine to “shut down” half of the cylinders under light-load conditions to improve fuel efficiency.

By sensing load and power demand, Active Fuel Management™ activates or deactivates four of the engine’s eight cylinders (two cylinders on V6) to meet driving conditions.”

  2. The way that turbine is moving around on the trailer makes me think that it’s an injection moulded screen prop.

  3. I like the “When Duty Calls” tag line……would be a great theme for a whole bunch of GMC mini-commercials (15 seconds) showing the truck in action and highlighting the various features.

Would go directly against “Ford Tough”

  4. The new trucks are outstanding! Both of them, for the ones keeping track! Shutting off half the engine when not needed is something that makes so much sense! These are the type of ads they should be doing, I think showing how much better these trucks are at saving fuel then its rivals should be in the future ads! I also think that showing what the cost of ownership vs these other trucks based on fuel, and repair cost!

Repairing cost for turbo’s can’t be cheap and should cost way more then GM’s new LT1’s engine line up!
