Today marks OnStar‘s official launch in Mexico. The service first announced its intentions to launch in the country in September of 2012, and joins the United States, Canada, and China as fourth market where the telematics unit makes its services available.
Initially, OnStar is available on certain vehicles, starting with the new Chevrolet Cheyenne (2014 Silverado) and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, while becoming available on the Cadillac ATS later this year, with more compatible Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac models arriving in 2014.
To properly launch in the Spanish-speaking country, OnStar has opened and staffed a new call center in Mexico, staffed with advisors trained to assist drivers with directions, vehicle information, and emergency services.
“OnStar’s expansion in Mexico makes it the leading provider of security and communications services in Latin America,” said Mary Chan, president GM Global Connected Consumer. “This is a very important step in GM’s global growth and in making connectivity services available to more consumers around the world.”
Among the services offered by OnStar in Mexico are:
- Automatic Crash Response
- Emergency Response
- Remote Services
- Stolen Vehicle Assistance
- Turn-by-Turn Navigation
- Vehicle Diagnostics
- Real-time Advisors
OnStar will be complimentary for one year in Mexico with the purchase of a new vehicle, with customers having the option to purchase one of two available packages — OnStar Connect and OnStar Connect Plus.

On Star I was in a drug cartel shooting and kidnaped. Could you call the American Embassy for me?
Theres more to mexico than cartels you know…
Whats with the bozo that commented first. I wonder if Onstar will be available on GMC Terrain in the near future.
Just depends where you are Larado or TJ and it is not Cobo.
Same thing here with Chicago vs. Other places. We all have our bad and good so stop being overly sensitive.
I had a 90% failure rate with Onstar navigation . very rude company to deal with .Corporate level is the worst . Beware GM WILL NOT help you deal with these thieves ! I have been driving GM cars all my life and will never buy one again if Onstar garbage is installed on it.
Theres NO WAY Id live in mexico but If I did Im glad Id have Onstar for added protection. Id think it would sell like hot cakes there!
