Holden Redline SSV Ute Caught Running The Nurburgring, Guess Who Was Driving

Motoring.com.au seems to have discovered the makings of a Holden marketing campaign before it’s even been officially announced, having uncovered the makings of some sort of announcement timed for the July time frame surrounding the Holden VF Commodore-based Redline SSV Ute.

For starters, the SSV Ute has been photographed running around the one-and-only Nürburgring. And according to Motoring’s sources, it was driven by Mark Reuss, President of GM North America. Reuss also had a busy weekend driving the 2014 Corvette Stingray pace car around the Detroit Belle Isle road course during the Izod IndyCar Series Dual in Detroit, part of the Chevrolet Belle Isle Grand Prix.

We’ll chalk this one up to a stretch, but Motoring states that this is all part of a marketing campaign to export the VF Ute to North America, thereby signaling the return of the Chevrolet El Camino, which would hypothetically be a spin-off the Chevy SS. If that’s the case, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

    1. Badge Engineering, YES, but this is the good kind! Bringing over an import and slapping a different badge can be very good. Pontiac G8, SS, Saturn VUE, Saturn Astra and the underpinnings of several other Opels on the Buicks. Would you mind if that brought over the Adam, Coscada, Zafira Tourer or how about the Holden Ute or Wagon? Bad Bagde Engineering still does happen, but they have gotten better and now they at least attempt to make them look different, we used to have 4 Lambdas, Traverse, Outlook, Acadia and Enclave. They each looked different. Now they merged the Outlook and Acadia together and I think it looks like the best Lambda. Just my opinion. I will now exit my soap box 🙂

      1. I don’t like Holdens having different names overseas because it makes it harder to tell people the car is a Holden and is Australian.

  2. It would be good not just for GM America, but also for Holden. Would they be offering more than just the SSV Redline, though? I reckon they could offer every model in the Holden ute range and find buyers!

  3. I expect we will get a Camino at some point as Mark wants it. The question is will we get it in the last years of this one or in the new VF replacement already in the works.

I expect we may see a expanded line of cars on the VF replacement as it could be built on the Camaro, CTS and ATS line. The Exchange factor would no longer be in play.

I would love a Camino at $30-35K but not at $45K. I just do not see a cheaper one imported.

  5. The only way GM could offer the Ute with the SS sedan is to create a special order system. They would be around the same price as the sedan, if you really want one that’s the price you’ll have to pay. But at least they would be available, that’s how it works in the UK (they’re stupid expensive over there if you do the exchange rate)

  6. BTW, the Nürburgring is up for sale.

So if you can shell out a few millions of Euros…

The regional govenment tried to make the site more attractive by adding an amusement park including a roller coaster (intended to be the fastest of the world), but that did not much visitors. So they try now to get out of the mess by selling the whole track.
