Ad Break: Turn Heads, Change Minds With Holden VF Commodore, Chevy SS

The Australian market now has the new Holden VF Commodore. Being that it’s described as the most advanced vehicle ever built on the island-continent, Holden is proudly advertising the vehicle as such, and is even cross-promoting the upcoming Chevrolet SS full-size sport sedan.

In the minute-and-a-half long video, we see the VF’s self-parking capabilities in action, it prowess on the test track, and the Chevy SS beaming with class in a road full of city cabs. After watching, let us know what you think in the comments.

    As good as the VE Ute “Evolution” ad, the VE Series 2 Ute Thunder Edition ad and the VE Commodore launch ad.

    There is also the new Holden “Think Holden” ad just released as well, I recommend GM Authority takes a look at it because it is brilliant.

  3. I like the ad but wish it had more SS in it. A likeness of the SS rear end should have been on the new Malibu as well.

    1. 1. Holden did not design the Malibu so that’s why the rear of the Commodore/Chevy SS is not on the Malibu.

      2. When you say you wish it would have more SS in it, do you mean more Commodore SS? I agree if that is the case but I think Holden wants to emphasize the up market feel of the car thus they show a lot of the Commodore Calais trim. If you mean Chevrolet SS, then I disagree. This is a Holden ad and not a Chevy ad, so whilst it is good that they are reminding consumers that they are exporting our car across the globe, showing too much Chevrolet and USA would probably convince consumers the car is no longer Australian.

  4. That was a really cool ad! I truly felt excited as I watched it.

    I’m really surprised that the SS was given as much focus as it was (even though it is “identical” to the Commodore). Do Australians care that the Commodore is being exported as the SS (although I find it interesting the SS isn’t referred to as the “SS”, but rather as “Chevrolet’s top of the line sedan”).

    This was well done, well produced and I think provides and excellent message!

    (Anyone know what the music in the background was? Just a generic loop, or something specific? I thought the beat sounded familiar.)

    1. The reason why Holden mentioned the export program (I believe) is because they want to emphasize the fact that this car is a “world class” car. Also, it shows how Holden is doing business to ensure they can still financially support manufacturing cars in Australia. Ford Australia who just announced they are closing Australian factories within 3 years, don’t have an export program and failed to ensure the financially stability of local production. Similar problem for Mitsubishi when they closed their Australian factory in 2008. Like Holden, Toyota Australia have an export program that helps support the costs associated with their Australian production.

  6. I find it hard to believe the same company that did such a lousy job on the Malibu would go to build this car. I would’ve come up with a more imaginative name than “SS” but in light of the aging Dodge Charger and Ford’s inability to compete directly with it, I hope it does well Stateside.

  7. You do realise that Holden (who designed, build and did everything for this car) had nothing to do with the Malibu. All GM North America did was agree to import it and call it the SS. Also, this car, the Commodore, has been in production since the 70’s so they didn’t “go to build this car”, they just updated it!
