2014 Chevy Equinox Gets Minute Changes For New Model Year: RPO Central

The ever-popular Chevy Equinox is getting a total of five minor changes for the 2014 model year, the most prominent of which is the discontinuation of Steel Green Metallic and the addition of Silver Topaz Metallic exterior colors. There are also new floor mats and a new set of 18″ chrome-clad aluminum wheels that are now standard on LTZ models.

Here are the complete RPO-level changes:

Deletions

  • (B37) Floor mats, carpeted first and second row
  • (GGU) Steel Green Metallic

New Features

  • (GWS) Silver Topaz Metallic
  • (RV8) 18″ (45.7 cm) chrome-clad aluminum wheels now standard on LTZ models
  • (B34) front floor mats and (B35) rear floor mats (available)

The GM Authority Take

The Equinox is already a winning formula, and the 2013 Equinox did receive more than a few changes. However, we were hoping to see the old 2.4 liter Ecotec LEA engine that serves as the standard powerplant for the compact-midsize crossover be replaced by the new 2.5 liter Ecotec to match the 2014 Malibu and Impala. Here’s to hoping for a rolling update for the 2014 model year.

  1. Reality is this car is not for much longer and sales have been great. They are just pretty much will ride this one out and the 2.5 will find a home here with the new platform.

This and the Terrain are amazing as sales are as good as ever and this was a hit from the start. Let home they do a well with the next gen.

    The wife loves her GMC.

  2. I always wonder are there aftermarket LED taillight for the nox and terrain?

  3. “Reality is”? Reality is this reeks of Old GM complacency. Their goal is to supposedly build the best cars and trucks, but here is a direct case of milking the cow for no reason and NOT building the best.

We all know the new Equinox is coming sooner rather than later, but the competition isn’t standing still (new RAV4, new Santa-Fe, new Sorento). That’s reality.

    1. It seems anyone with W body in their name would understand stale and old.

You have a vehicle setting sales records in it final full year and you just added a 3.6 engine to it last year. Let see do you put a lot of investment into this one or do you apply the new money to the new platform that needs to carry you through the next 5 years?

While GM is doing much better they still have more work to do than they have money for at one time. GM is not unlike most households where you have to pick and choose and budget what you do. All MFG are pretty much like this. Even the others you praise so the similar things.

The present vehicle will have a 5 year life and that is about what most have anymore and it is still selling in numbers greater than the year before. Investing much into this one will not reap the development cost involved and the investment would be best in the 2016 we will see in 2015.

GM is investing in the future here not in something that is not broke. Lets face it we are not dealing with a Old W body Impala that has to have a large discount on the hood to get them out the door. The present Nox is selling at a very high transaction price and in great numbers I think GM can live with that for one more year.

  4. The Equinox is already stale and quickly becoming uncompetitive. How much longer until the current version is replaced?

    1. You have no real life knowledge about the Equinox success, and all you can give is an indecent and negative opinion on the best selling American CUV. I have a 2009 Equinox (the last of Gen1) and it is perfect, giving no problems in four years of ownership. My family and friends, (some have newer imports) are awestruck on the features and comfort that the Equinox has over their imports. If GM sells the Gen 2 (2010 – 2014) Equinox well, why should it change now? Wait until 2015!

  5. Would really have liked to see the old 2.4 replaced with the new VVL 2.5 as in the 2014 Malibu and Impala with 196 HP and 1-2 better MPG which would place the Nox and Terrain well ahead of any of it’s competitors at 34 highway MPG.

  6. I can see the updated 2.0 turbo with 295 lb feet of torque replacing the 3.6 in the next gen

    1. David with the loss of weight the Turbo will work so much better as it will have power when needed and you can keep out of the boost when not needed. The heavy weight now would make you dip into the boost much and hurt MPG.

I own a 290 HP 315 FT LBS 2.0 now in a 3200 pound vehicle. Now that we have owned a Terrain for a year now I can see first hand why it is not in there now.

I think you will be correct in your prediction.

As for the 2.5 Production is not up to where it need to be for them to have enough to go around yet and I suspect that is why the delay if the present Nox at all is going to get it. Also there are 2.4 engines to use up too.

I am not sure where GM is on their production lines but it was just recent they announced more money for plants here in Ohio for increased eco engine parts production.

  7. So, for 2014 no change at all. Take some give some. It’s tired and I am getting tired.empanage6

  8. I’m a little nervous about the next version. I keep hearing smaller in most of the reports which I think will take away one of it’s advantages and leave a large gap between it and the traverse. I hope it’s not the case but it’s sounding like the same strategy that was used with the Bu which didn’t work so well. I too am disappointed that the turbo or 2.5 wasn’t added as an option. The cruze diesel would have been interesting option too. I’d love to get my hands on a SUV that could get close to 40 MPG.

  9. Folks here is your answer on the new Nox and Theta line.

    http://www.autoblog.com/2013/06/12/buick-version-of-equinox-terrain-cuv-spied-testing-with-auton/

    Yes it is a Buick.

Do not get too worked up as even now the Captiva, Nox, and Terrain are all on the same platform and show there is a difference in size and shape. Most people do not realize the Captiva and Nox are the same under the skin.

This one looks 12-18 months out. This is why you did not get much this year.

Just because you do not see as much as you used too there is more going on at GM than ever. Something that needs to be considered when looking at new products. The changes will come more often and more dramatic.

    1. I have seen the Captiva up close and it is smaller than the Equinox that I have. It may have some shared components, but there is a huge difference with the body size and shape!

A smaller Equinox may be attractive to many, since it save weight and gas, but I love my 2009 Equinox, and will not change it until Gm produces a EREV or BEV version.

  10. My Husband and are disappointed that the Equinox is much narrower in the back storage area than the Kia Sorento. We still want a small SUV but need to put our Golf Clubs sideways. I know you can put the back seat down and push it forward but then you can only take 2 players instead of 4. Our cousin ended up buying the Kia because of this lacking feature in the Equinox. We have heard a rumor that GM is coming out with a small Buick SUV besides the Encore that will be close to the Equinox size. Sure hope they widen the space between the wheel wells. We still want to buy American!!

    1. I have to agree about the cargo area. It is this reason that we did not buy Equinox/Terrain. When you have to put seats down to carry golf clubs then the engineers are missing the boat. Ford Edge has the same problem. we chose the new Hyundai Santa Fe. Best buy for the dollar for sure.

  11. Hello Linda…………I understand your problem. The wheel wells do intrude. But…..I have a 2011 Nox. I just put my order for a 2014 Nox. Both have the six with hrdraulic power steering. I am an engineer, and for me this is the only power combination I would get. It gives excellent road feel and a power back up. I have many miles on my 2011. Problems…..ZERO. I looked at the Kia and their brothers, but they are not American. And, for me, that was the deciding factor.
Good luck with whatever choice you make………………Richard

  12. I am on my 4th Nox, 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2013 . We still have the latest 3 in the family. just took delivery in April of 2013 2lt sun roof , nav , remote start etc. The current car is not long in the tooth. the style still looks fresh and after driving the 2013 and comparing to the new Escape, Rav . CRV the car is still extremely competitive. It has better quality materials inside. Real world fuel economy is very good, the refinement , noise levels are better than most on the market. Combine that with exceptional rear seat room , awd and you have a terrific family vehicle. There have been many improvement since 2010 , it may not look different , but build quality has improved 200%. Its a great vehicle. My 2011 V6 awd has 160 k and looks like new , very few issues, 2007 has 240k with the old 3.4, awd . 2lt . Its still a very good and reliable vehicle .

  13. Really liked my earlier Equinox. Ordered a 2014 several weeks ago. It has arrived at the dealer. I decided to lease it because it is the last year for this model, but GM hasn’t decided their lease program yet and I may have to wait several weeks!!!!!!! Is this anyway to run a company? So much for the “NEW” GM. That Ford Escape is looking better and better

  14. It’s a shame they didn’t at least fix the rear vent issues with theNox. I have a 2012 that is perfect for me with the exception that my kids are sweating while I’m freezing….

    1. I think you can put it as if the air flows to the feet and to the face…. It works for me on my Terrain.

    2. I can’t stand that the backseat has no air ventilation either. We didn’t even notice when we downsized from a much loved suburban to a 2013 LTZ. I also don’t like the blind spots. The area in each front corner by the side mirrors. I can’t tell you how many times I have not seen pedestrians in a crosswalk. Scary! The front seat console, where the gear shift is….should NOT have a shiny chrome finish. The trim should be brushed like the rest of the area. I can’t have my sunroof open on a sunny day without that horrific glare from the console. It’s a nice looking car and I’m glad I got the bigger motor. It has a nice zip to it!
