Ex-GM Engineer And Husband Incarcerated For Stealing Trade Secrets

Back in November 2012, the trail accusing former GM engineer Shanshan Du and her husband Yu Qin of stealing GM’s hybrid technology trade secrets for the purpose of self profit, began. Du and Qin were both indicted in the summer of 2010 on three counts of trade theft and wire fraud.

Six months later, and the trail has concluded, with Du and Qin both receiving jail time. Qin, the husband, received a sentence of up to three years in prison while Du was sentenced for a year. The couple planned on using the data to seek business ventures or employment with GM’s competitors in China, including Chery Automobile Co, according to The Detroit News.

“This is all my fault,” Qin said at the hearing. “I want to take full responsibility. I want to apologize to the court for all the trouble I caused.”

Du also was filled with remorse.

“I have made poor decisions, she said, crying. “I wish I could have done differently,” she said.
