Approximately 450 students graduated from the Mendoza School of Business at Notre Dame this past Saturday, and it was GM CEO Dan Akerson who addressed them at the commencement ceremony, where everyone dressed up as varying levels of wizards, and the graduates received pieces of paper symbolizing tens of thousands of dollars of academic hours.
For the Notre Dame business grads, Akerson stressed leadership, and broke it down to four key points. Some of the students took notes on the speech with their iPhones. Probably.
From a business perspective, Akerson stated that a good leader contains the following qualities:
- Defines reality by setting priorities
- Allocates capital and scarce resources to meet those priorities
- Is willing to serve
- Leads by example
Then everybody threw their hats in the air.

Really? What the hell is he going to teach them? How to bankrupt a company and give world leadership to Toyota? He’s qualified for that speech. They should have brought in Alan Mullaly.
