Ad Break: Australia Meets Opel OPC (Updated)

Released in March, this commercial touts Opel’s high-performance OPC range to Australian customers, who have only recently seen the return of the storied German brand to their country. The ad is filled with stirring clips of three equally-beautiful blue Opel OPCs — the Astra, Insignia, and Corsa — lapping a track, while the on-screen narrative states the following:

  • The blues go to Arizona
  • The saints go to Colorado
  • But we dees — we do our performance training in Germany’s Opel Performance Center

The spot wraps up by inviting customers to test drive the new range at an Opel dealer, followed by Opel’s infamous Wir leben Autos tagline.

The GM Authority Take

We still can’t get over those gorgeous shots of the three Opels on the track…

Now if only our fellow Australian readers could provide some insight (in the comments) into what the ad’s commentary means, we’d highly appreciate it.

A big “thank you” goes out to Melaine Kerin from Opel Australia and to Craig Cheetham from Holden for their helpful explanations of the ad’s commentary. As it turns out, the Blues (Carlton Blues) and the Saints (St. Kilda Saints) are Australian rules football teams that do their high-performance and altitude training in the US of A during the pre-season. Meanwhile, the Dees are Melbourne FC (aka The Demons), and they’re sponsored by Opel Australia.

The concept behind the ad is to “play on the performance training of the sports stars and link it to [Opel’s] high-performance line of vehicles”, according to Ms. Kerin.

Now that makes a lot more sense!

  1. Hi Alex

Opel Australia is the Proud Sponsor of the Australian Rules Football Team – the Melbourne Demons (ww.melbournefc.com.au) who feature in the TVC. The concept of this TVC, developed by our creative agency was to play on the performance training of the sports stars and link it to our high- performance line of vehicles. We have two versions of the videos with the stars of the AFL (Australian Football League) and the NRL (National Rugby League) teams we sponsor.

Your questions regarding the references to your US states is that many Australian Rules teams do their high performance and altitude training overseas – the St Kilda Saints train in the off season in Colorado and the Carlton Blues train in Arizona.

  3. When will we get a version of the Astra OPC/VXR? What an awesome car.

  4. The Astra OPC might sell a bit but Opel will struggle if they don’t drop their prices.

  5. “Germany’s Opel Performance Center” is ambigouus — it kinda suggests that the track to be seen in the video is the actual Opel test center, which it is quite certainly not, but this doubt will certainly be rejected by pointing out that actually Opel OPC (= Opel Performance Center) cars are meant in which those players do their training.

The landscape seen in the video looks quite bleak, while the actual Opel test center at Rodgau-Dudenhofen is in the thick of the woods, as to be seen in the link to Google maps.
