As General Motors released some of the specs on the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, GMNA President Mark Reuss told The Detroit Free Press a few things in regards to the upcoming all-new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks. Perhaps most importantly, the trucks are slated to launch late next year, most likely as 2015 models.
To describe its characteristics, Reuss stated that “this is going to be a new truck — a new size of truck with a new set of powertrains in those trucks… it will be a little bigger than a (Toyota) Tacoma.”
Sounds like the proportions of the C/K trucks from the 1990’s. A good sized truck, though we feel there’s definitely room to offer a truck even smaller.

please be a diesel option!
@ gmfan yes, as well as a gen5 V8 option!
Ehh.. I want this.. But that is really far off.. I was hoping for this year
It sounds like it will be too big for me.
I like the size of my Colorado.
Seems the 1/2 ton full size pick-ups have moved up to the 3/4 & 1 ton pick-up size and the compacts have moved up to the 1/2 ton full size pick-up size.
Wish it wasn’t getting any bigger.
They talk about getting better mileage and cutting weight yet they keep making the trucks bigger and bigger. Have an ’02 S10 crew cab and it looks tiny even next to my buddy’s Tacoma. Bigger is not always better.
I guess I’ll have to wait and see the truck down the line. Offhand, though, it doesn’t make much sense to me to have these trucks be too close to the full size trucks in size. I recall an earlier comment by Mark Reuss saying they will be 95% of the full size trucks. I don’t understand why they would do that and I agree that there is room for a smaller truck, maybe just a touch bigger than the outgoing ones.
bronc624 – Mark Reuss said that the new Colorado/Canyon will do just about 95% of what a full size pickup can do. He was talking about work, and hauling. Not size. . . .
Evanr, thanks for the correction. i appreciate it and i am glad to hear it. hopefully the actual size will be a bit smaller
I don’t think they need to go to 95% of the full sizer. that just seems a bit big. After all aren’t they supposed to be mid-sized trucks? Hope they put a diesel in it and a V8. My brother has one with the V8 and it is awesome.
I think many here miss where this is going. I would not be surprised to see this truck groomed to replace the full sized 1/2 in the next ten years.
They are to the point to where MPG Is harder to come buy on the larger truck and only size and weight will removal will add more.
I just have a gut feeling this truck will be at some point the new 1/2 ton and the larger truck will be left to the 3/4 and heavier classes since CAFE rules are different for the heavier trucks. Remember Ford has the same size truck in other countries now and it could be here real fast when they want it to be.
Trucks will fundamentally change greatly in the next ten years. CAFE is going to take a bite out of the 1/2 ton market unless there are changes. You will still be able to get a larger truck but it will be heavier and more expensive.
There has been speculation that with the way the rules are written that it would increase the sales of the heavy trucks in 10 years.
I too wish that the GM would return to the S10 Sonoma sized truck. I stopped buying trucks as I do not need anything that large. I loved my Sonoma Ext cab and even my GMC Sprint SP I had years ago. To day I am driving a HHR as it haul what I need and if I need a truck I get my In-laws truck to use if the need arises.
The fact is not everyone wants a large truck.
Also I tried to convince myself to buy a Colorado but just could not do it. I just never connected to that truck. Nice truck but just never liked it enough to buy. Now if it had the 2.0 Turbo my HHR had and FE5 suspension tuning I may have changed my mind. I am not an HHR fan but the way the SS drives sold me. It hauls in two different ways.
Scott, you nailed it. I have an HHR as well as my S10 Crew Cab. Had a ’98 Sonoma extra cab with the ZQ8 suspension. that drove really nice. Good size for a commuter/Saturday truck. Would love a Ute/El Camino.
Scott, I do understand that some day trucks will end up getting downsized. But, it should be a worthwhile difference. I don’t see how only a 5% downsizing will make much of a difference in fuel economy. Plus, the average car, SUV etc. will be downsizing more than this over the next several years. So, I don’t get why these new trucks would be barely any smaller than the current half tons.
Does anyone know what the size difference is between a current Colorado and a current Silverado? It could be that 5% is not as close as it seems. It’s more likely that I don’t know what I’m talking about. 🙂 However…. I currently drive a 2010 four door Taco. When I ride in any full size truck, it feels like a 50% difference in size compared to my “midsize”. I’m hoping GM’s hype for their new midsize is deserved. The baby Dmax would be the berries, IMO. Fingers are crossed!
Scott, Ford is already working on a down size truck, It is being tested as we read. There is an article in TruckTrend .com. So i believe you are right.
What happened to the days of reaching over the edge of your truck, and picking something up from the bed floor. Try that today! Hah! Unless you’re 6 + foot tall it isn’t going to happen. Beside, what idiot designed the front seat. Great (sic) idea. Try riding their for more than a couple miles. Unless of course you’re no more than 50 lbs. Where the hell are vent windows and a bench seat. Some buyers want a TRUCK, not a suburban status symbol. Pathetic!
Bring back the S-10. Not everyone needs or wants a large truck
If it’s anything like (stupidly!) discontinued Dodge Dakota, this truck has possibilities. My ’01 4.7V8 has AWD (in addition to 4WD) & stock 1750# payload! LUV IT! 🙂
Don’t make it too big. Keep the automatic shifter in the steering column. If you go diesel, make it at least 5 or 6 cylinder.
There should be a 3.9L Turbo 5 cylinder diesel and a 4.3L Turbo EcoTec3 V6 with a new Honeywell Turbo, which has two smaller impellers and one turbine and has the power of 2 turbo in one.
I don’t like the new Colorado. The v6 seems way underpowered and like it’s constantly searching for which gear to be in. Plus the truck is ugly, and sits way too low.
