Ad Break: This 1990 Pontiac Commercial Is Narrated By Patrick Stewart

This Pontiac commercial aired sometime in 1990 through 1991 and features the voice of the Patrick Stewart, of Star Trek fame. The ad’s jingle says that the time to fly is now, “with the power of fuel-injected multi-valve engines, the security of anti-lock braking, systems, the agility of 4-wheel independent suspensions — this is a vast Pontiac technology for the 90s”, adds Mr. Stewart.

The 30-second spot concludes with an offer, that “from now until January 7 [1991] special factory incentives make all this Pontiac technology even more affordable.”

The GM Authority Take

Oh Pontiac.

As it turns out, Mr. Stewart did some voice work for Pontiac back in the 90s. In fact, there’s a tale that while rehearsing the first appearance of Picard as Locutus, he recited the line as “I am Locutus of Borg. Have you considered buying a Pontiac?”, setting the entire cast and crew into fits of laughter.

Any Trekkies out there who also happen to be fans of Pontiac or GM? (Not the the two are mutually inclusive.)

Hat tip to Danny.

  1. Trek fan and GM fan!

    I remember Patrick Stewart:

    “It’s about style…
    It’s about quality…
    It’s about 12,000 dollars.
The all new Pontiac Grand Am.”

    Or something like that.

  4. Looking back at these cars it’s easy to see the genesis of the Pontiac brand destruction. That 4dr GP??? What was that awful car. ‘Cept for that sweet 91 Firebird, GF/future wife bought a new one in 91, red w/black interior. LOVE that “bat mobile” front end on it.

    1. I do not get the 4dr GP comment. Are you saying Pontiac should not have built a 4 door pontiac?

Look around. 2 doors just do not sell in any kind of volume.

      1. I just think they looked odd and ugly, particularly with all the horrific plastic “cladding.”

  6. The only odd ball out of the Grand Prix, CutlasSupreme, Regal and Lumina was the Lumina… The Grand Prix 4 door at the time (while maybe not for everyone) was nice… You really have to put everything into context, these cars were really the renaisance cars in 90s renewing customer confidence from the early 80s… Also in regards to the era everything was front wheel drive except for the Camaro, Firebird, Caprice, Mustang and The larger Fords Grand Marquis ect…

  8. I’m just glad that both cars and car commercials have improved significantly since the horrid ’80s and ’90s.

  10. Shakespearean trained actor, lands a role in a sci-fi tv show that he didn’t really feel much for, does VO work for GM, and then later plays a crippled mutant leader.

He just told me to visit my Pontiac dealer, and I don’t have the guts to say no to him.
