Rendered: 2014 Cadillac ATS Coupe

The eagerly-awaited Cadillac ATS coupe is coming, sometime in next year. It will allow Cadillac to compete with “The German 3”, all of which have coupe variants of their luxury sport-compact offerings, including the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A5. In this segment, coupes usually command higher prices, and a customer that’s more up-market than those who purchase the sedan.

So our question is this: will Cadillac play it safe with a design similar (or just like) the one we’ve rendered, or will the Wreath and Crest brand get creative and give the two-door compact some distinct coupe-only styling elements?

  1. Sedan looks so good on the road that it really stands out from the BMW and M-B’s. Great job by Caddy and a coupe only helps with this. Can’t wait to see the ATS-V.

  2. Coupe looks more accessible for everyday drivers than the CTS coupe. The ATS is an all-around winner. Keep the chrome to a minimum: Cadillac should take a cue from BMW and keep the sport/luxury image understated.

  3. No crappy executive hatchbacks please like BMW & Audi they don’t work.

    1. @Jon what crappy executive hatchbacks? Like the BMW 1M or the A3 line?

  4. No not them A3 & 1 Series quite desirable. I mean 3 series GT, 5 series GT & Audi A5 sport back.

  5. And of course the Audi A7, if I’d have wanted an executive hatchback 🙁 I’d have purchased a now axed & long gone Citroen XM, Renault Safrane. Executive hatchbacks do not sell.

    1. Oh c’mon! One can’t pick on the A5 Sportback and A7 for several reasons. Sure, one may not like the design (I do, personally), but the cars represent an entirely new class of car — combining the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatch, even though the hatch is made to look like a sedan. The 5er GT is anything but that… being especially ugly (to me). But even if the design of the A5 Sportback and A7 isn’t to your liking, one can’t argue the financial benefits of selling such models: by basing them on the architecture of one model below their name and charging a hefty premium for the exclusivity and design, these vehicles bring in a hefty profit for each automaker, even at very low sales levels.

So, “executive hatchbacks” (I’d call them coupe/sedan-like hatches) don’t need to sell. The reason they exist is that they’re already huge profit centers for the respective automaker in very low volumes.

  6. sharp car….coupe should sell very well…the car is small already so it should bring in lots of euro car buyers…I like the smooth lines; yes, keep chrome to minimum and add some really impressive wheels to make it a stand out 🙂

  7. I think this cries out for a convertible.

  8. Executive hatchbacks cost little yet sell few & generate lots of profit, I’d still sooner have saloons/estates & a slow selling coupe based on the donor car. (In Europe hatchbacks are seen as small sometimes cheap runabouts, hence why top executives & chairman don’t want their luxury barge to reflect that).

  9. Will somebody tell me what ‘&amp’ is please?

    Reply
    1. That’s the “ampersand”. Sometimes, a glitch happens in certain systems and instead of seeing “&”, you see “&amp”.

  10. GM needs to use the same design as the CTS coupe. I have one and people love it. The design is bold and distinct. Be bold cadillac. This rendering is good, but it’s not daring

  11. I prefer the CTS sedan because I think the back of the coupe looks too bulky and heavy. I don’t think the ATS coupe would end up looking bulky at the back. If it ended looked like this rendering, then I’d welcome it with open arms and a smile upon my face….. I’d just hate to sit in the back seat.

    1. Ooops, I didn’t notice the grammar errors. I meant “If it ended up looking like this rendering”.

  12. I hope the real thing looks better than this. This is just a bad Photoshop. From this angle they just the easy way out.

I expect GM to do something special with more style.

    1. @scott in that case, you fall into the latter group who thinks that Caddy will get “creative and give the two-door compact some distinct coupe-only styling elements” (as per the article above). The rendering is simply one possibility of how it might look… our guess, if you will.

      1. Well, it is obvious this is only a rendering of a future car; it can and most likely will be changed about….I know it will be a great car as is the current CTS coupe!

  13. Personally, I like the rendering. Sort of reminds me of a similar one done sometime back of a possible Cruze coupe. I also think one car with the radically beautiful lines of the CTS 2dr. is enough in their line-up.

  14. Cadillac needs this coupe to be more competitive with Mercedes, BMW, Audi ..
The coupe should be a pillar less two door hardtop

  15. Btw small hatches (Audi A3 etc) & medium saloons (BMW 3 series etc) are just that, there is no executive about it. To be an executive car it has to be 5, A6, E etc class.

  16. That fine line between being prestige & charging a fortune for an average product & pretending to be prestige (not many get it right, temptation to go a class smaller or to make the next mee too in the name of extra sales & a quick buck).

  17. The 4 door looks so AWESOME I don’t think they need a coupe. Plus it’s not practical, the ingress/egress would be horrendous. I don’t think younger buyers care about coupes much anyway. Instead of spending all this money on a coupe version, I wish they would spend it making a RWD XTS instead of the rental car it is, hurting the brand.
I disagree with the chrome comments- my Cadillacs have lots of chrome on them baby! (actually, chrome has been gone for 20 years, we call it “brightwork” now)
