Here’s How The 2014 Camaro’s Rear Lights Look… In The Dark

Undoubtedly one of the more controversial updates to the freshened exterior design of the 2014 Camaro and Camaro Z/28 is the rear tail lamps. Gone are the two-element units and their intricate appearance of depth and texture; in their place are a pair of LED-based horizontal units that remind us of the first-gen Camaro.

The lights, arguably, look better in the dark than during the day… but that’s rather subjective. That’s why we’d like to know what you think of the revised tail lamp design. Talk to us in the comments.

  1. With a little modifications they could had made them into lighted bow ties.

  2. A little Dodge-esque, no?

  3. I like them.

  4. The wait is over. I have seen the 2014 Camaro and with those taillights, I don’t think I will be trading my 2012 for this. Guess I will have to wait for the next upgrade.

  5. So much to do over something that will be forgotten in 6 months.

    1. Same here. I don’t see why everyone is raging about taillights. It’s not like GM punched your mother and called her ugly, it’s a friggin’ tail light.

  6. I think it’s a nice little update, refreshing to see GM actually give a real refresh.

  7. Sorry Chevrolet, but at this point in the game with the two top American contenders just refreshed, The Mustang comes off the better looking of the two.

  8. The taillights are OK I guess. They are less noticeable than the previous ones. Creates a ho-hum look to the rear end. But they are reminiscant of the original Camaro and the 66 Impala.

  9. I just spent 5 minutes comparing 2013 and 2014 rear. I may be in the minority but I prefer 2014. I think it’s simpler/more functional/stronger. I predict there’s a lot of advocates who simply like the retro two light look. However I don’t feel that way at all. I also predict it’s safer at night (two small lights vs one large led based light). Curious if any engineers would agree with me.

  10. This is what to expect when it comes to performance cars.

Generally when they come out 50% love the changes 50% hate them and 6 months from now 80% of the haters no longer have an issue.

We see this with the Corvette every change. Just look as the Bi%Ching that went on over the pop up head lights being deleted and now few even mention it.

The fact is a lot goes into building a car and they know they will never make everyone happy. They shoot for half upfront and earn most of the rest in time.

Next up on the complaint list will be the 2014 Mustang. Many will belly ache over the loss of the retro styling. Other will micro complain other points but in the end it will continue to sell. Watch for this to repeat with the new 2016 Camaro.

Now you know why Automakers mostly have grey hair.

  12. Tail lights look okay until you turn them on at night and see those yellow polka dots around the perimeter.

  13. Wow GM/Chevrolet screwed up. This is what you get when you have people who are not engineers or car people running the show. They are worse than the bean counters. Those lights look good, BUT they should be jazzed up and on the new vette and the vette lights should be on the new camaro. Good going GM. Aagin you screwed up. Get the donkeys out of GM and let engineers and car people make the big decisions.

    1. I think Al Oppenheiser, Cheryl Pilcher, Scott Settlemire, John Fitzpatrick and Mark Ruess would like to challenge that statement.

If you do not have any idea who these folks are and just what they do and have done for the Camaro then you truly are clueless my friend.

Hint these are the folks who call the shots and are all real car people not Donkeys or Bean counters. Yes they make the big decisions no matter if your subjective taste like it or not. .

Trust me you will not find a better core group of car enthusiast calling the shots here out side Bob Lutz. Funny but they put in their places buy Bob accept for Scott who over saw the F body program for years before. He goes by the Fbodfather on the web for a good reason.

To be honest these folks names above are pretty much responsible for you having a Camaro in the first place. People like Scott and the others never let GM go after they killed the 4th gen and they push and push till They got help from Lutz and others to bring it back.

    2. You nailed it buddy! You totally nailed it! As soon as I read your idea, I visualized the two cars swapping rear lights and it made them both a lot more attractive..the lights on the 2014 Corvette would slot perfectly on the new Camaro, and the lights from the 2014 Camaro would look..mmmmm..okay on a Corvette..just okay..

  14. I have no problem with these new tail lights. They remind me of transition from 70-73 to 74-77

  15. At least these new taillights should quiet down the controversy about the similarity between the Camaro”s and Corvette’s.

  16. I truly LOVE my 2013 Camaro!!! The update is here and it is beautiful….but, I prefer the look of the 2013….right now. Maybe the update will grow on us. Seriously, it really is fabulous…….You out did yourselves on the 5th Gen………hard to compete with perfection!! Keep up the great work!!! 🙂

  17. I personally love this Camaro especially the Z/28. I think these taillights now make the whole Chevrolet lineup mesh much better. The Camaro lights have a similar design element IMO to the SS Sedan, Stinray, Impala, and Cruze. Which I know is crazy to say but somehow to me atleast this makes most of the lineup flow much more cohesively. But it also resembles the rear of the 1st Gen which makes it even better.

  18. The tail lights look like a Honda or Acura. They cheapen the appearance and are shameful.

    1. Agreed. All bad @ss Camaro from the front and ugly Prelude from the rear. Change the name to Premaro. No amount of time will make me say this ugly baby is nice. Bet the 2013 owners are ecstatic since their used cars will be more sought after.

  19. Overall I like the updates on the 2014 Camaro. The tail lights are kinda boring. I think since the are kinda 3D looking they should have given them more depth with the black like the 2013 Mustang tail lights. I’m not a Ford guy, but the 2013 Mustang tail lights are some of the best or the best looking tail lights out there.

  20. These new tail lights look much better than the current ones, which look cheap up close.

  21. While i think the new tail lights are just ho hum.. I sure hope they are sealed and not like the 2012 tail lights.. Nothing worse than trying to get all that water out from behind them so that you don’t have water marks and dirt running down the back of the car right after it has been washed and dried.

  22. Looks great! This is a more cohesive look and will absolutely grown on people.

  23. Simply, ugly…. smaller on the front, regular-plain tail lights, not the reason I loved Camaros.

  24. I believe in first impression and this is no different. I own a 2011 SS/RS and love the retro look but the 2014 reminds me of newer vehicles, so NO I do not like the look but I understand what they are trying to accomplish.

  25. Literally, the sleazy car dealerships down the road are selling 2011-2013 models with 30K miles at full price, because the new taillights look so stupid. Will not buy a new model until the problem is corrected.

  26. The last time Chevy had such wimpy looking tail lights it literally killed the camaro.
I come from a camaro loving family and even my Grandfather had a 69 with 327 engine and I loved all camaros up until th 4th gen which had an ok front but once I saw the rounded rear end go by it left an awful impression and it no longer looked like a vicious sports car even though chevy began significantly increasing the horsepower in the late 90’s.
I have two daughters and they had a little plastic Barbie doll toy car in their child years and my wife and both daughters began calling the 4th gen camaros a”Barbie Car” every time we’d see one go by!
I thought about buying a 30th or 35th anniversary camaro as an investment but my wife says she doesn’t want a Barbie Car in our garage and would rather get a Rustang!
The 4th gen turned off sports car enthusiasts and I wonder if the new 2014 camaro taillight design will hurt the market as there is no way I would ever buy one. It’s funny that Chevrolet thought the current (2010 to 2013) taillight design was good enough for it’s flagship- the all new 2014 Corvette!

  27. I am not a fan of the new taillights. My own humble opinion is that that changed the tail lights so as not to confuse a Camaro with the new Stingray. I will state that the new Stingray is absolutely awesome in every way!

  28. The new lights make the Camaro look less sporty and more like a sedan. Love my 2012!

  29. It seems like they changed the tail lights to differentiate the new Corvette Stingray (Which is absolutely awesome). My own preference is I like the older style better like my 2010 2SS/RS

  30. I don’t particularly care for the new 2014 tail lights. The tail lights on the 2010 through 2013 Camaro’s was distinctive. GM has updated the style and given it to the 2014 Corvettes. Damn shame.

  31. I like the old lights better especially since you can make them sequential like the mustangs which have the best tail lights in the muscle car industry as of now. I hope they bring them back or after market lights are any better then GM’s attempt. They took are lights and put them on the new stingray which look great but they should be on the Camaro too. Or just give them a deeper look rather than completely replacing them

  32. I first saw these tail lights on the interstate about 3 weeks ago and i was stunned at how unappealing they were. There was something about them they kept making me think of the old 90’s Cadillac Allante. I then got a further look at the Miami International Auto Show. I noticed the base model and SS/ZL1 models had different looks. Both, however, were still lack luster and need updating. It just looks like they gave up when it came to the redesign of the tail. I actually heard 3 different people share the same opinion at the auto show. It kinda validated my feelings. I really hope they go back to the drawing board to come up with something more interesting.

  33. The thing that eats me up the most is that the tail now looks like a modern day Acura Integra and I consider those to be trashy soup can mad bro cars. I dont want a car I associate with a car I despise…

  36. The 2010-2013 taillights looked nice, since they had a retro design on a retro car. The newer taillights clash with the car’s design. They look out of place, because they are out of place! Very unflattering and a bland redesign. Small details like this, ruin this car’s persona.

  37. I will be looking to buy a 2013 Camaro.
The tail lights on the 2014 look like they belong on a lincoln.
They should combine the 2014 front with the 2013 rear and they would have something. OR……………
The 69 Cheverolet Camaro was the finest muscle car ever built.
Just make it again with the modern suspension and engine and they wouldnt be able to make enough of them. P.S same goes for the late 60’s and early 70’s chevy pickup too!!!

  39. The tail lights look okay, although not as distinctive as previous ones. My big beef is the cheapo black plastic comes up too high. I don’t know why GM followed Fords mistake in 2010. Ford sold 70,000 less Mustangs, 2010-2012, than in 2007 to 2009!

  40. These New Tail Lights SUCK!!
With a very busy work schedule and family life I was the Last one to find out like a Dumb-As. When I began seeing these UGLY tail lights on the Camaro in 2014 I naturally Assumed they were an aftermarket Part that some Idiots thought looked cute so they stuck them on their car. Just this last feb 2015 I finally learned the truth that chevy intentionally put this Monstrosity on the Camaro for Good! My life has not been the same.

I’m a chick that is serious about chevys and American cars. Ive owned a 1986 Z28, 1967 camaro and my very first car at 18 was a 1982 Trans-Am that Kicked Ass!! A little about me, I literately cry when I sell my cars. When they are are injured ( New Scratch, Engine issues or big repair I am emotionally upset for a while. I even talk to and comfort my car when she goes to the car wash because she really doesn’t like strange Mexicans rubbing all over her, lol! (bad joke, relax my BF is Mexican! 🙂 )

Anyway, when I found out that I am FORCED to Choose between the Beautiful, sexy, Masculine 2010-2012 model or SETTLE with this CRAP I am very Heart broken. These tail lights look sooo BAD! Like a Buick, family, Boring, Average Car!
I cant BELIEVE that I will NEVER own another Camaro until they GIVE BUYERS THE OPTION TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THIS UGLY CRAP or the Original Tail Lights. A CHOICE in the tail lights should be Offered as a TRIM option in my opinion!!

    Make Sense Chevy???

All I know is that Im in the Market to Buy myself another Camaro and Unfortunately I CANNOT buy a New One because these lights literately make me wanna Throw Up!

I Hope New Chevy Camaro Sales have Gone way DOWN and they Snap out of it!! I am forced to buy a Used Car because there is no way In HELL I will pay a 400 buck a month car payment to walk out to my garage an look at THAT!
I Emailed Chevy voicing my complaint. This argument Will Not Die for me until I have the Old Tail Lights as a TRIM Option, everyone is Happy!
