Earlier in March, General Motors recognized 83 of its best global automotive suppliers during its 21st annual Supplier of the Year awards ceremony held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. The role of suppliers to GM’s automotive business is critical, to say the least, and the Supplier of the Year awards are GM’s way of recognizing companies that the automaker considers to be “world-class”.
To put things in perspective, GM awards the Supplier of the Year prize to less than one percent of its roughly 18,500 suppliers worldwide. Yes, you read that right — GM has a whopping 18,500 suppliers, demonstrating just how complex, intensive, and involved the automotive business is. In any event, the winners, according to GM, are acknowledged for delivering “innovative technology, superior quality, timely crisis management and competitive, total-enterprise cost solutions.”
“Suppliers play a critical role in our business and we’re thrilled to recognize those we consider to be world-class,” said Grace Lieblein, GM vice president, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “Each winning company consistently exceeded our expectations by being innovative, delivering high quality products and services on time and by creating outstanding value.”
The 83 companies that GM has awarded for 2012 are headquartered in 17 countries and contain regional manufacturing and support services all over the world. Of the 83 recipients chosen by GM, five are certified diverse suppliers and 46 are repeat winners from last year. This time around, General Motors introduced a new honor called the Overdrive award that recognizes suppliers “who have undertaken extraordinary initiatives that drove exceptional results for GM’s business”, according to the automaker.
“The Overdrive Award recognizes those world-class companies that have truly gone above and beyond,” Lieblein said. “They have not only met the demands of our business, they have also demonstrated through their actions a great commitment to their communities.”
The 2012 General Motors Overdrive award recipients are:
- Ideal Contracting, Detroit
- Clark Cutler McDermott, Franklin, Mass.
- International Automotive Component Group, Southfield, Mich.
- SL Corporation, South Korea.
General Motors selects the recipients of the Supplier of the Year and Overdrive awards with the help of a global team of GM purchasing, engineering, quality, manufacturing, and logistics executives.

Very interesting…it takes so many vendors to make a car…the overall quality of each item is what makes GM successful of course
