The upcoming April edition of Car & Driver will have this rendering of the next (6th) generation Chevrolet Camaro. As you may be able to tell, Chevy’s CODE 130R concept seems to have served as the artistic inspiration, with the rendering maintaining the overall body and shape of the current fifth-generation model while adding more aggressive styling cues, especially in the front fascia.
Expect the next-gen Camaro to become smaller and lighter by switching to GM’s new Alpha vehicle architecture shared with the Cadillac ATS, 2014Â CTS, and others. Coupe and convertible body styles will be offered, and the engine range will include of 4, 6, and 8 cylinder powerplants. The model is elected to come to market in late 2015 for the 2016 model year.
Do you like C&D’s rendering? Let us know in the comments.

As an avid Camaro fan, this is terrible.
The Code 130R is ugly, and makes for an ugly camaro.
I think everyone with any ability to think would prefer the next gen camaro to be similar to the IROC-Z era body style.
Not 100% sure about the IROC part, although I do hope the next one’s very racy looking (in addition to cheaper), but I agree with you that this is completely terrible.
Awesome comment, you nailed it! I love all the negative comments that follow! I think the current Camaro is AWESOME and I would not freshen it much at all. A GREAT design can go 8 years, the Camaro is a great design (except for that ugly 1/4 panel flair just after the door- loose those ugly 3 debossed stripes to stop drawing your eye into the design flaw). Other than this, the Camaro is pretty cool.
looks just like the mustang thought -_-
vomit……………….
BAD. The Camaro should retain it’s distinctly non European or Asian look. This looks too much like stuff coming from Asia.
At sonic boy finally somebody with good taste I agree the code 130R is ulgy. They Should use the gen 3 or the Tru140 for the next Camaro.
now this i would own. not the oversized comical monster it is now. light weight, based of the ats, and wicked fast with a v8 under the hood with optional awd? fuck yes. the code design isnt for everyone but its a hell of a lot better than the bland fwd tru concept or the current camaro. the code concept is a global sales market car, something the camaro is not.
Code130R Yes; Camaro conversion no… These should remain 2 seperate entities… This front end does not belong on every Chevy specifically Camaro; Camaro should stand with its own identity… Nice try Car and Driver…
No way will GM spend all the money on a new platformed vehicle and keep the exact same look except for a fascia revision.
If you would have told me this is a midcycle I would have believed it.
I can’t see GM going with the split design grille on the new camaro when they’re going away from it on every other model in chevy’s lineup.
That is one nice looking camaro
Can the bow tie get any bigger? Next Chevy is just going to look like the the bow tie from above.
Nice try Car and Driver. lols at Car and Driver.
I don’t really care for this look. I agree that GM should steal some cues from the gen3./Iroc z. Maybe just put the design engineers from the stingray project over on the camaro.
This one looks awful, please don’t try to keep consistant with Mustang concept. Camaro should look more agressive. I know GM can do better the way you came out with the 5th generation.
Chevy Camaro Sonic edition.
Just because there is a new Mustang coming doesn’t mean you have to panic. From what I’ve read it will even have a 2.0 4 cylinder turbo (247hp) aimed at ROW where displacement is a dirty word.
There was also another idea on gmauthority that was based on the third gen camaro that was also pretty cool but this one looks like a plastic toy
@Adonis I think you’re referring to these here:
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2012/12/these-6th-gen-chevy-camaro-sketches-are-awesome/
Naw it’s ugly ..Plus.the camero needs it’s own.look, not.copie.the 30r concept look plus.there.two.different.cars.so no!
If you didn’t tell me, I never would have thought it was a Camaro.
ewww. lets hope not.
That’s a high belt line
Hey look everybody! It’s Lightning McQueen!
Alex did you read all the words in the story?
Did you also really look at this photo and see what it really is?
What you have here is the present body just shopped out with the Code E130 nose grafted on. This is just a poor representation of nothing,
If you had read the story the Gen 6 is reported to be taking the image of the 2nd Gen Euro inspired car and not the mess you have posted. I am not sure if you are just jerking people here for a reaction or you really have no clue?
The next car will be on the Alpha and will lose a lot of weight.
As of now the 2nd Gen inspired Gen 6 has only been started by Car and Driver as no one in GM is talking. As of now the info is more under cover than the C7 was.
With the car due out in the fall of 2015 I would be watching for hints as time goes on but it will be maybe August before we may get some deep camo photos in Death Valley for hot weather testing.
I would expect much of the work for this car will be done under the ATS body.
The bottom line is no one outside the Camaro team, the GM tech center has much of a clue to what we will be seeing styling wise.
For now for your creditability I would not call this shopped photo a hint at the future.
Trust me on that!
Scott — it seems that you’re upset… allow me to clarify a few things.
1. What you see above was printed in C&D. Nothing more, nothing less. In fact, my narration of the rendering says just that:
“The upcoming April edition of Car & Driver will have this rendering of the next (6th) generation Chevrolet Camaro.”
Pretty factual and simple to understand… not sure how you could go wrong here.
2. Yes, the C&D article did state that the 2nd gen Euro-inspired model will serve as the inspiration for the 6th-gen. Inspiration can take a lot of forms… and this hasn’t been reported anywhere else except for C&D, making the intel a bit suspect. Like you said, no one “really knows” what it will look like…
3. Yes, the next-gen Camaro will utilize the Alpha architecture. As stated in my story”
“Expect the next-gen Camaro to become smaller and lighter by switching to GM’s new Alpha vehicle architecture”…
Pretty factual and simple to understand… not sure how you could go wrong here either.
4. Yes, the rendering shows the 130R’s front fascia on a 5th-gen body. As stated in the GM Authority story:
“As you may be able to tell, Chevy’s CODE 130R concept seems to have served as the artistic inspiration, with the rendering maintaining the overall body and shape of the current fifth-generation model while adding more aggressive styling cues, especially in the front fascia.”
Pretty factual and simple to understand… not sure how you could go wrong here either (thrice).
So, it seems that all of of your points of contention were accurately and factually addressed in my original story… did you not read it?
I like the sides, losing some of the overwrought look of the current car. The front end is nice toward the outsides but bad in the middle. But, the most important thing for the next gen Camaro is to lose a LOT of weight!
Totally what i figured.. the Code 130 would be the new Camaro..
That would be a big “NO” code, can we all get back to funny April fools jokes?
Even with a gen5 LS7, I would walk away!
The rendering is simply from the imaginations of Car and Driver writers, based on the Code 130R, apparently. Doesn’t mean the Camaro 6 will look like this when the time comes. The good news is that the car will almost certainly be based on the Alpha structure, which will make for a great vehicle.
I just hope you can actually see out of the next one better than the current ride. Visibility is awful.
I agree with Marc, the visibility is a major issue to be vastly improved on the next Camaro.
Audi-like headlights? No, this can’t be true!
Alex I was having a bad day but still no matter how you state it you were very misleading here with a very poor story.
Sorry I have come to expect better from you.
If anything the R130 has been linked to a possible sub Alpha car to compete with the GT 86. Even if it makes it to market it would be a amazing if it even shared much with that car.
Chevy has a new face and I do not understand why some are using the old face yet? In two years the bar will be gone. from most of the cars Chevy and Holden offers.
Even the present Camaro is well past this.
No thank you, enough of that Chevy “nose thing” already!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE !!
Chevy is moving away from this type of grill.
It does look similar to the forthcoming Mustang.
I hope to God we don’t start replicating the 1982 Camaro – not a great era for Chevy or Camaro. Keep moving forward with the evolution of what made Camaro great and fun in the beginning.
Of course, you can’t stay retro forever…Ford realizes it too.
I have a newer SS which i call newage retro, which i love, this rendering has no retro at all and wouldn’t sell with that malibu style front end, this cannot be true
Get rid of the ugly cheby grille and lower the doors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is one tame looking car. Please… no..
Is this Car & Drivers interpretation or do they have info right from GM?
Technically speaking, it’s the 130R fascia grafted on the body of a 5th-gen… so it’s neither one or the other.
NO.
So Alex, who is the artist or source of this rendering? Is it in anyway released by GM?
Oh no, the artist/source is C&D. Not released or guided by GM whatsoever.
That front end looks like a Viper had sex with a Traverse. Not pretty!!
OH GOD! I cant get that image out of my mind!!!!!!!
When talking about future small RWD cars for GM, it’s funny how often people refer to competing with the looks of the Toyabaru twins. I can see the price point being desirable. But today for the first time I came across a Scion FRS in traffic and I almost didn’t notice it. The styling is much less interesting in person. The current Camaro cannot be missed. I do believe it needs much better visibility and to tone down the coke bottle sides somewhat, but please don’t have the styling benchmark be what is really a somewhat bland car.
I’m surprised by all the gushing over the FRS myself. I think it’s incredibly dated looking, and that it looks like a cheap kid’s toy (literally, a cheap kid’s toy). The only really good thing about it, IMHO, is that it’s tiny. Which I’m grateful for, as so many small cars aren’t small anymore.
Well it is a toy, so to speak. I’m sure anyone hating on the FRS/BRZ/GT86 triplets would firmly find their foot in their mouth after driving one for 15 minutes
I love it, I’d buy the Subie, BRZ, because I could never get past the thought of knowing I own a Toyota/Scion, even if they are all basically identical.
I think it needs about 35-50hp more, and about 100ft-lb of torque. But that is nothing a turbo can’t solve, and has already. The Crawford BRZ looks to be amazing to drive.
The average person doesn’t know what a good handling car is until they drive one of these. If GM ever tried to go up against it they better not chince out on anything performance wise.
Yeah Joe, two things sell that and the BRZ. Size and price. If GM does something similar but better they will find a lot of sales.
OMG I am still agonizing over the C7 and this is even worse!!! At least dump the split grill which looks way too much like a Malibu or Cruze. If this is what it will look like I’d say “Strike Two” on the designers and stylists at GM.
Dont like it.
This camaro is the one of the ugliest I’ve ever seen in my life.
I wonder if GM is following all the negative comments on this one. If so, anyone at GM who supports this design is probably being beaten with stick right now.
THIS WAS NOT DESIGNED BY GM!!!!
THIS IS A CAR AND DRIVER RENDERING TO FILL SPACE IN THEIR MAGAZINE.
If anything Welburn is laughing at it.
I’m well aware of that, 62vettefp. I just meant that if anyone at GM may have seen this rendering and said it’s cool and they should consider incorporating many of the aspects of this rendering their own eventual concept, they should note the negative comments here. And I was wondering aloud if they follow comments on sites like this. I think it would be smart, as it’s much quicker and cheaper than always having to set up and run their own focus groups. These sites do some of the work for GM for free.
Good lord………………keep rendering.
Its a perfect model for the Camaro the Cts and Camaro concept is the newest more creative idea that shows where the markets future is sailing to. I like the new 6th generation as a owned car for my very own self. GM and C and D i’ll be in touch.
This render has lost the camaro heritage… reminds me of the vanilla styling of the the last attempt at the GTO..
As a life long Chevy guy and Camaro lover, I have to say that 130R design is hideous. Chevy designers need to break out of the ugly split grill, cookie cutter mentality. It’s horrible.
es muy feo pierde la esencia de pony car ha y el mustang va a tener ese motor en su forma ecológica pero va a tener un motor v8 de mas de 650 hp ysu forma se vuelve un poco mas curva pero no pierde la esencia
looks like a pile of shit
ICK!!!! Reminds me of Ace and Gary’s ambiguosly gay car!!!!
IROC FTW!
Oh wow! It looks just like my wife’s Malibu!
4 cyllinder: PUKE!! Even V6 is B.S., camaro is a muscle it is only acceptable with V8.
The current camaro with some revised looks would be better option. BUT this one looks better aerodynamics wise. Maybe now the ZL1 will hit 200mph
