Add 31 Horsepower, 39 Lb.-Ft. Of Torque To Your Camaro ZL1 With K&N’s New Intake Kit

We’d recommend seeing a medical professional if you think the Camaro ZL1 isn’t fast enough to begin with… because 580hp and 556 lb.-ft. of torque is nothing to sneeze at. But there is a solution for those who think otherwise, and want to add more power quickly and easily: all you need to do is pay a visit to K&N’s website, and order their carbon fiber intake kit. And then install it.

The K&N performance air intake (part number 63-3079) was built specifically for 2012/2013 Chevy Camaro ZL1 models and yields considerable gains: 31.7 horsepower at 4300 RPM, and 39.7 lb.-ft. of torque at 3300 RPM.

The intake kit costs $799, and will not only add power, but save weight thanks to the light carbon fiber. Did we mention that the underhood sex appeal will quadruple, and that it has a million-mile warranty?

To recap: the ZL1’s 6.2 liter supercharged LSA is an utter powerhouse in bone stock form, and K&N offers a great solution for those who feel the need for speed extra oomph. Let us know in the comments if you’re planning on adding this to your build list.

  1. I think I’d add it just so I had an excuse to say my ZL1 broke 600 HP.

  2. Anyone thinking an aircleaner will increase cylinder volume of colder charge with boost, I’d like to sell them a bridge and for $800 🙁

For $400 you can get a good custom tune done and I have seen multi times in doing tunes 70 plus HP gains

Then adding a $400 water/methanol kit will do quite well, reduce cylinder temps, raise the octane level quite nicely

Last ZL1 I did the flywheel HP went to 660 and Tq to 570 ft/lbs for the same costs as that aircleaner and this way the water/meth will keep valves and piston tops free of carbon buildup

    1. Out of curiosity, where are you located? Anywhere near Tampa FL? I wanna put a new Cam and heads on my goat before I go overseas and don’t feel like driving all the way to Vengeance Racing.

  3. I plan on adding a 2013 ZL1 to my garage first, hopefully. 😉

    1. Excellent choice. Might we also suggest the new Z/28?

  4. Volant intake with their PowerCore dry filter will blow the K&N out of the water. The K&N isn’t even a true cold air intake

  5. Does it still need oil for the air filter? I hate K&Ns because of the added maintenance; I prefer “dry” washable filters. I can think of other ways to pick up 30hp on a ZL1 that don’t require $800.

    It sure looks nice though.

    1. It is a dry filter, here are the deets:
“Volant Filters with PowerCore® Filtration Technology: This air filter is the most revolutionary on the market. Manufactured by Donaldson® to Volant’s applications, this filter uses advanced technology for improved efficiency. This material is a high-quality synthetic, that won’t deteriorate as easily as traditional paper element and cotton/gauze filter media, while also providing vastly improved filtration up to 99.97%. In addition, it’s water resistant and never needs oiling. PowerCore Filtration Technology works by directing air into the front of the filter, where it is channeled into its fluted design. The channels are alternately sealed, allowing air to enter through an open flute and forcing it to exit out an adjacent flute. This allows the air to be filtered in one pass through the filter media with less restriction, allowing clean air to enter your engine for increased airflow and higher filtration efficiency. This technology allows the filter to include a 4 year or 100,000 miles warranty when used in urban conditions.”

I put Volant intakes in everything I own. I had the PowerCore filter on my old CTS but am just using the oiled filter on my current CTS.. I didn’t feel like my Mazda6 was worth putting any extra money into lol.
The K&N is $800 lol, Volant sell theirs for roughyl $300 depending on application. They are closed box and draw air via hoods/scoops from the proper areas of the engine bay.

  6. So we are supposed to believe that GM left 31 HP on the table on their top of the line Camaro on account of wanting to save a few bucks on the air intake?

Unless it comes with a new MAF sensor and a tune, this is complete BS.

    1. @Kinsley I don’t know about all that… K&N doesn’t usually joke around, and has a great reputation.

      1. Could depend on the dyno too. I’m not well versed on it, but I am fairly sure that different dynos (dynojet vs dynopack are the chassis type dynos) can produce different results. Dynojet is what basically everyone has seen, the car is strapped down and the drive wheels spin large rollers. Dynopack has the wheels removed and the dynamometer is attached to the hubs, so you don’t need to worry about wheel slippage and other factors skewing the results.

Who knows, K&N could even use an engine dyno and list gains straight from the flywheel with no loss through the drive-train.

I no with absolute certainty that the K&N intake for the 1st gen CTS with 3.6L does not produce the power they ‘say’ (3rd party testing was done on the Cadillac Owners forum with every type of aftermarket intake available for the CTS, and also the DIY home “hack” mod to the stock air box to see what was best. Volant won with a 15rwhp gain (so roughly 18hp at the crank) and the modified stock intake even beat out the K&N).. but then again, K&N is very clear and lists gains as “estimated”.

I personally don’t like K&N intakes, they cost a f***ton and aren’t even true cold air intakes.

    2. Don’t forget, this is Chevy NOT Ferrari. GM has to deal with NVH standards, GOV regs, as well warrenty and cutomer tolerance issues. Believe me, automakers that produce vehicles for the massess leave lots of hp on the table when those concernes are factored in. (have you read my rants about the weak exhaust note of newer GM V8s)

But no worries, the aftermarket as well as do it yerself owners are always extracting every extra bit of hp.
