2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS: Here It Is

Highlighted with the debut of the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, the 2014 model-year Camaro SS bowed alongside the latest pony car variant, also showing a restyled design language, front and back.

Compared to the previous model, the visual changes around the exterior give the 2014 Camaro a wider, lower, and more matured appearance. Though we must admit, we’re not too sure about the rear tail lamps, even in person. However, features such as the fully functional hood extractor and integrated rear spoiler provide aerodynamic improvements over the previous model. The ever-cool “halo ring” HID headlamps on all Camaro RS models continues to live on in the 2014 Camaro’s design, as well. The 2014 Camaro also receives a few upgrades on the inside, such as an optional color driver information center.

Under the hood, the Camaro SS powertrain seems to remain unchanged, with the 6.2L LS3 small-block V8 engine still resting between the fenders, with the choice of either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

We’ll have more content on the 2014 Chevy Camaro as the New York Auto Show continues, but in the meantime, behold the gallery of the new Chevrolet, and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. You can’t always get what you want but if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need….. I think that perfectly describes this Camaro to most…..but what does the V6.look like?

  2. Well said archangel, life’s too short to be worrying about things out of our control.

    1. I like 2014 better then 2013. This rear end reminds me of a cross between last gen Integra, last gen Prelude, and 3000 GT. All of which look good.

      1. Good examples of what it reminds me of as well, I see that Mitsubishi 3000 GT influence. I want to say Nissan 240SX too for some reason. Could be what the designers were going for, a cuter Japanese car. I think it is a lot softer and should appeal to more women buyers.

        1. I had a 1992 3000GT VR4 those tail lights wrapped around the whole back of the car and had Mitsubishi written in the middle… I don’t see it in the Camaro The 240SX would be a better example

            1. I miss opening a hood and seeing…the engine. Who decided engines need a plastic cover?

      2. WOW, you guys must be young. No 3rd gen Camaro? No 1974-1982 Camaro? Never mind, the 4th gen Camaro wrap around tail lights…and all the other Chevy wrap-arounds over the last 40 years.

I guess it’s a generational thing (although I’m 35) All i see in the tail lights is late 70s-early 90s Camaro. Not a single Japanese car crossed my mind.

  4. As a former owner of a Oldsmobile Starfire I am offended :-)… Not sure how you conjured up the idea that the Monza tail lights look like the new Camaros… The back looks clean, if it had anything more everyone would have been pissed it looked over done… Good grief give it a rest…

  5. I like the update but really GM, what I’d be interested in is an Opel GTC.

  6. OMG, I guess I didn’t look at the back too closely since I was focused on the ugly tailights- what is with the cheap plastic gray fascia/bumper? It looks like the ugly 2010 Mustang. The body color looks SO much better, wow this is ugly. Plus, it parts behind the license plate so you can’t use a black plate frame, or a body color frame to smooth out the look. Why would they put such an ugly fascia on it, do they expect these to be New York taxis getting bumped all the time? Where did they source that cheap plastic- recycled 1992 Ford Taurus bumpers? I think the Corolla has a body color bumper, the details suck on this Camaro. The design team must have been influenced by the Toyota Yaris (the base model), the higher trim has a body colored bumper.

      1. Nope, I just don’t say “it’s ugly” I tell you specifically WHY it’s ugly, and why it will affect sales. The Mustang in 2010 did a lot of the same thing- make the lights squint, and put a bunch of cheap plastic on the back, sales fell. I worked with car designers at Mazda & Honda and they will tell you styling is subjective, but there are technial elements that make a design busy or sleek. Busy designs usually don’t do well.

        1. I don’t know Micheal, objectively this car is far simpler in its front and rear design elements that the 2013 Camaro.

I’m sure it will sell just as we’ll if not better. As far as the 2010 mustang restyle it was a definitely improvement on the more “agricultural” sn195. Sales fell off because of the Camaro, which admittedly it kind of aped in the grill and fender haunches. Personally I feel the current mustang is no improvement (although I really like the blacked out rear panel and LED wrap-around for each of the 6 rear lights)

  8. Not a bad update in some ways. Disappointing there is no pertain update in the SS though. I wonder if they will bother with that for 2015 or just wait until the all-new car?

  9. Love the idea of a 427, should have used the euro tail lites, instead of a massaged monza lites, but like the car ,even with the mustang lookin front end. I’d have one

  10. The more i look at it the more i like this. I was a big fan of the new 5th gen. but something about it never made me cross that line to “must have”. This one on the other hand comes off as much more sophisticated, and refined in it’s styling execution. I really like how they defined the headlight and grill interaction, and gave it more of a “scowl”. the refined and more areo appearing lower front bumper is better too. I never really liked how the Driving lights were encased in that square protrusion on the front corners.

The rear? If i have any complaints, it’s that it almost doesn’t look “sporty”. More like the tail end of a nice sedan. What saves it is the LEDs in the tail lights and the prominent exhaust ports. Fortunately there is so much taper from the flared fenders that you can see the meaty tires and rear haunches which redeems the “muscular” intentions of the car.

  11. Jzellis…. Thank you, thank you… This whole BS with the tail lights has driven me nuts… Its like we are dealing with 5 year olds with no substance suddenly on GMA… Referencing 90’s Lexus… Seriously… Have you looked at cars GM has produced over the last 40 years to reference (besides the Monza)… Again thank you… I need too go patch the holes in the walls I made pretending to pound all the fools posting there pathetic comments about the tail lights… The car is beautiful plain and simple…

    1. Lol, glad to help out, but for me, instead of getting mad, I remember everyone isn’t a car fanatic let alone GM obsessed.

  12. MichaelW, I understand what your saying, and I am sure they could have added colored rear bumper over the black plastic… But in the context of the entire car and how nice it looks over all not sure if it is a deal breaker and that sales will decline…

  13. Comment from the NYC Auto Show today.
#1 BMW 3-series is in my view the car to beat. I’ll take a 320i xdrive (awd) for $38k. Interior makes me feel smarter than any other car out there. Great price. again, tough to beat.
#2 & #3 Cadillac ATS at $41k and XTS at $55k are gorgeous. Really outstanding exterior design. I was taken aback. XTS in particular was a well made car. I’d take either one any day of the weak (speaking at a 28 yearold). However the interior, as much of an improvement as it is over the last cadillacs no question, still feels a bit gimmicky. Side note, XTS attracted a very distinguished and discerning looking crowd. really really impressive showing. To me these are the #2 and #3 cars of the show.
#4 2014 Camaro is outstanding. much more craftsmanship and style than either the mustang or dodges. no kidding, camaro wins. although I think that the LS version should NOT exist. it just lowers the standard too much and for what $3k? LT should be the minimum version. i’m cheap and i would never consider the LS — feels like a rental. i can’t wait to climb in and test drive the 2014. little concerned about rear visibility but we’ll see.
#5 2013 dodge dart interior is glorious. far and away the best of any compact including Honda/Toyota/Cruze/Focus. Chevrolet needs to steal that german designer now. too bad the reviews make it sound only a so-so car to drive. #5 car of the show
#6 2013 grand Cherokee interior is glorious. puts every other suv interior to shame. again, I’ve heard the quality of new jeeps is so-so. but that german nailed it again.
#7 2013 Chevy Equinox interior is probably the best of any Chevrolet SUV right now. I would honestly take $34k chevy equinox over any of the other chevy SUVs right now. really outstanding. in my view it’s a fight between grand Cherokee and equinox at this price range and equinox wins on quality.
#8 2013 Chevy Cruze. it’s been said before. seems like the winner of its class based on what ford/Toyota are putting out. Honda certainly attracted a lot of the target demographic, though.
#9 2013 Mercedes SUVs are really doing great right now. but i feel like Cadillac could contend with the new escalade. a LOT of room for improvement over the new escalade interior model.
#10 For the life of me i can’t figure out why Ram 1500 won truck of the year and Ford F-150 outsells Chevrolet/GMC. the Chevrolet/GMC trucks definitely win on interior quality. hands down – best most simple functional quality design.
