Next-Generation Opel Insignia, Cadillac XTS Reported To Be Sister Cars

While everything is still very vague on what we can expect with the next-generation Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, WordCarFans.com is reporting that the brand’s flagship will bear close resemblance to the next-generation Cadillac XTS (or its replacement) in the future. This, according to WCF, is based on the words of new Opel CEO Dr. Thomas Sedran.

While the XTS launched not even a year ago, the current Insignia has been on the market since 2008, and will have a modest refresh for the 2014 model year. When both all-new models make their debut, expect them to be on a new platform, what we’re hearing is internally referred to as “E2XX.” This would also mean a step upmarket for the Opel brand, who competes more in line with offerings from Volkswagen than it does Audi. But we’re also not sure why the XTS and Insignia can’t be individual vehicles in the first place.

  2. And I thought there wasn’t gunna be a second XTS?

  3. My guess new insignia sooner then later say 2 years, with an updated Caddy in 4 years. My other guess is a rear drive vehicle using Alpha/ATS or CTS architecture for Opel Coupe and Sedan models – next 2 years…

  4. The XTS will be replaced by a larger sedan in 2016. Then the 70+ year olds will have their enormous Caddy back.

  5. So will it be platform sharing or badge-engineering? But the XTS is too big for a midsize sedan in Europe or will be the next gen Insignia SWB while the XTS is still LWB? What about Buick I thought GM wants to merge the brand with Opel, but to me it seems like GM uses Opel models as transition models for Buick until they replace them with independent vehicles like they did with Chevy in South America. Chevys vehicles in South America were almost always rebadged Opel cars with a bow tie badge on the gril but for a few years now they bring their own cars on the market. I hope GM has a real business plan for Opel in the future, not only for the next 5 years but something like Volkswagen did with Audi in the past.

    1. Platform sharing accross all GM brands, but badge engineering between Opel, Vauxhall and Buick; Opel and Vauxhall very tight, it’s really only the badge, while the badge engineering Opel/Buick is somewhat looser. Grille and back lights differ, also the interior.

The end of badge engineering Opel/Chevrolet and Opel/Holden signifies that GM is separating the brands, making Chevrolet a global brand (badge-engineered as Holden in Australia), and on the other side Opel with Buick in their respective markets (oh, and Vauxhall, limited on the UKoGBaNI).

  6. So Cadillac is keeping the Xts? I thought they were going to discontinue it when they make their flagship.

  7. I think XTS will be changed up to look more unique than the other Cadillacs? It is very nice but also very, very similar to Impala…

  8. XTS will stick around and even though there will be price overlap with the ATS and lower end, next gen, CTS, it is a completely different car and consumer target than those vehicles. The XTS is not a halo or range/brand topper, it is a well equipped beige vehicle in the Caddy line up meant to pick up slack from the expired DTS for the older people and people wanting comfort and a well equipped sedan.

  9. I think, it will be a new flagship model for Opel, bigger than Insignia, maybe new Omega.

  10. My understanding is that the current Insignia and XTS are already related. The Epsilon II platform comes in two sizes. The smaller includes the Insignia and Buick Regal. The larger started with the Buick LaCrosse and Saab 9-5 and has expanded to the SAIC Roewe 950 (in China) and the XTS. The larger group all have a 2837 mm wheelbase and a tread within a mm or two of 1585 mm.

  11. I know this is quite far get he’d, but how about if the XTS turned into the 4 door coupe sedan like the A7, CLS, and the gran coupe……I can’t wait for Cadillac to make one of them….

  12. Opps, I forgot to include two Chevys in the Epsilon II platform. The new Malibu’s weelbase was shortened to agree with the Insignia and the Regal and the 2014 Impala has the same 2837 mm wheelbase of the Epsilon II Large platform but its track differs more than the others in this group.
