Holden Signs Major Sponsorship Deal With Australia’s National Rugby League

As somebody who used to play a bit of rugby, the news that Holden has signed a 3-year “multi-million dollar” deal with Australia’s National Rugby League is exceptionally pleasant. It’s a sport that makes American football look like cheerleading, and it’s a damn shame that the sport isn’t more popular here as it is in other English speaking corners of the world. Nevertheless, as with all the scrumming, tackling, running and kicking in the NRL, the Holden Lion will be just about everywhere, including exclusive naming rights to the following:

  • The Holden State of Origin Series between New South Wales and Queensland
  • The Holden Cup (formally the NRL National Under 20’s Youth Competition)
  • The Holden National Under 20’s State of Origin Series
  • The Holden Kangaroos, Australia’s national rugby league team
  • The Holden One Community Monster Raffle

Yes. The Australian national team will be officially titled “Holden Kangaroos” for at least three years. Say, that doesn’t sound like a bad name for a car, either.

  1. Umm… hate to tell you this after you’ve published the article but the NRL isn’t the Rugby you’re thinking of. No mauling or rucking. The NRL is ‘Rugby League’ where you’re thinking of Rugby Union. There is a BIG difference between the two and fans of each hate it when people confuse the two. Bigger difference than American football to Canadian football. Don’t worry though, not many people outside of the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland (where the NRL is most popular) know the difference either.

    1. Der. I should have remembered the difference when I read the word “League.”

      1. Lol yeah it confuses people because they think its the National League for ‘Rugby’. Not many people outside of NSW and QLD know the difference anyway.

  2. Yep, league and union are two different styles of rugby, kind of like comparing UFC to pride fighting. League is much more “punchy” where union is more controlled.
