Why Does The 2014 Corvette C7 Look Just Like An SRT Viper?

When an alleged photo, and not a rendering, of the 2014 Corvette C7 leaked out last night, the internet nearly exploded. Of course, after months — even years — of speculation and leaked CAD renderings, this would happen. And while it does, by all accounts, seem to be the C7, something about the leaked Road & Track photo seemed a little off.

It could be just us, but we could swear we’ve seen that front profile before in the new SRT Viper — an all-American arch rival to the Vette. And it could just be a coincidence, but we think it’s something worth talking about. Maybe the grey-hued Corvette photo used isn’t an official photo at all. Perhaps it’s actually a Photoshop rendering using the SRT Viper, and other renderings floating around online. Just look at the similarities in the headlights, for starters.

So, did Road & Track just punk everyone? Or are we staring at a bona fide photo of the C7? We really won’t know for sure until tomorrow.

Editor’s note: the original version of this article referenced photos from Automobile Magazine. This was in error, and has been changed to Road & Track — the alleged source of the photo of the C7’s front-end.

Update: looks like the leaked images were of the 2014 Corvette Stingray C7 after all; check out the details of the new Vette, complete with specifications and photos, right here.

  1. They don’t look alike. The Viper is all rounded and ugly, the Stringray looks a lot more like an F40. Gotta wait to see it in person, but it looks mighty fine to me!

  2. It’s also on the cover of road and track.. apparently in order to get the car on this months cover gm had to give them photos to use .. I think this is def the new vette.. yea the whole profile looks almost exactly the same but if u look the front design screams sting ray
As the viper is supposed to be a snake.. however I doubt they’d wana steal the vipers look its most likely shaped identical for aerodynamics n its just coincidence

  3. They’re similar as the previous versions.

  4. Chevy can’t seem top do anything original anymore they just copy what everyone else is already producing…. If this is the real vette I hope the hideous rear gets updated before I am ready to order a new Z06!

    1. So Chevrolet, and Ed Welburn, waited until the official design of the Viper was known and then copied it in a few short months? Sounds likely…

  5. Both cars seem like natural evolutions of their predecessors. It’s merely a coincidence that they should converge on such a similar profile. But in reality, each looks appreciably different, and I doubt either company would be accused of copying the other in the future…

  6. They share a similar profile but not the same look. Plus I doubt that’s the real c7 because no company would want to reveal their flagship early and kill all the anticipation and excitement.

    1. It’s the real C7 🙂 And it wasn’t that GM/Chevy revealed it early, it’s some (rather questionable) journalism tactics that resulted in these leaks.

  7. I think both cars are still distinct, and while I like the Vette better, I also appreciate the looks of the new viper.

  8. That aint the new Vette.

    1. Yes it is

  9. Well, seeing as cars are shaped by science, and they both are direct competitors trying to succeed at the same thing, you can imagine why they would look a little alike.

  11. Thank God I wasn’t the only one who noticed this!

  12. They are twins split at birth to face each other in battle.. But from what I remember they both kind of resembled each other in shapes, but if this is the new Corvette which I think it will be.. This is the first they ever looked so close.. I guess I will just wait till tomorrow to find out..

    1. They have always resembled each other in overall look n this is just the front view n if u look closely u can see the stingray look in the hood design .. and the headlights look nicer on the vette

  13. I dont think so , the headlights look like the same, but other than that there completely different, from a distance they would look the same, as other said, there very similar cars trying to accomplish the same thing, anyways, the corvette and viper have always been similar in exterior design, aerodynamics probably had to do alot with it.

  14. Maybe this whole thing was just a test mule created to ruin Jalopnik’s credibility. Tomorrow, they will reveal a fender-flared, dule-port tail-lamped, basket-handled beast that has been testing in the depths of the Amazon.

  15. Some of you fine gentlemen are missing Manoli’s point. It’s not that one is “copying” the other… instead, its that the Road and Track photo might be colpletely fake… Did I get that straight?

    1. Glad to know somebody is picking up what I’m putting down.

  16. Having owned both cars the Viper doesn’t hold a light to the corvette , Never has.

  17. Earlier genuine spy shots conflict. The air intake is different

  18. I like it the Corvette nose looks flat out “angry” can’t wait until the 13th to see the real deal. For all the haters out there, you probably weren’t gonna buy one no matter how it looks, I sold my 2011 in preparation for this I’m all in!

  19. If this isn’t the what the C7 looks like due to the picture being photoshopped, then a wrench has definitely been thrown into the gears.

  20. There is a resemblance and I would expect that to be the case because computer modeling is used to assist with design and engineering. But the front-end grill tends to look more Ferrari-like to me.

  21. lets see the whole car, I’m SURE you won’t mistake the vette for a viper or viseversa. and yes how did road and track get pictures already?

  22. I wish everyone would stop attacking the Corvette saying it’s a copy of a Viper. If anything, it’s the other way around. The Viper keeps gettng shorter, smaller, develops a sleeker profile — very corvette-like. And since when did the Viper all of a sudden become an original design others borrowed from? The entire car was “European influenced” said so by he manufactures. Take away the front emblem and I swear you were looking at a Jaguar. The rear is a definite rip off an Aston Martin.

In regard to the Vette, aside from the shape of the headlights I don’t know what the comparison to the Viper has to do with copying! The Vette’s design was already being developed while Dodge was going threw bankruptcy. New buyers come along and the Viper is no longer a Dodge but an “SRT //” (at least in identifying theory), and things get moving along. Seeing the new Viper, although beautiful, is an embarrassment to it’s muscle car heritage. You can call it an evolution in design or forward progressive thinking, Viper was not meant to be as refined or as small as a Corvette or its European rivals. That’s what set it apart from everyone else.

  24. Other than a couple Caddy models, GM just can’t add exciting and original style to any of its car lines. Corvette has had the same fundamental style for 15 years. I’m a Vette owner and have been waiting 10 years for a style change. If these early photo’s represent the new Corvette, then I’ll be looking at other manufacturers to replace my aging Corvette. How about some style excitement, shorter length, high performance V6, 25 MPG City, etc. Did GM get any inputs from Corvette owners or are they in isolation?

  26. Actually Chevy didn’t copy the Viper.. As stated above this car was in development way before the new SRT was ever revealed.. There has been spy shot before the viper was released or revealed.. As performance I’m still amazed that the so called “aging” ZR1 can keep up with the newest Viper, and actually out paced it on the track. Wait for tonight till they finally can show off the whole car.. New engine, new look, new transmission, better aero, better interior.. Hopefully the doubters will be silenced..

  29. the *2013* Viper came WAY before the *2014* corvette. Look at the styling similarities. Look at how chevy BLATANTLY COPIED Dodge. is the new viper completely original? i never aid it was, but chevy seriously took the viper and mixed it with elements of the new camaro and the F620. I know im going to have a ton of thumbs downs on that, but i really dont care! CHEVY COPIED DODGE AND IS ATTEMPTING TO PASS IT OFF AS THEIR OWN. like i always say, never trust a man in a bowtie (chevy)

  30. oh.. AND the interior is a copy of the Supra.

  31. I think both look nice, and there are strong similarities between the two cars, but if anything, I feel the C7 design was ripped right off the Ferrari F12 if anything. God I hate the rear of that car though.

    Reply
  32. They look almost identical in the front. Convergence I guess but I can’t tell the difference without a double-take.

Rest of the cars are different. Vette looks better overall because of the sharp creases and angular momentum. Viper has more rounded, sweeping lines but that’s not in now.

Overall, one of them should change the front during mid-cycle. Hopefully both don’t change the front to look the same again!

  33. GM (Corvette) has been copying the Viper for years. Go back and look at every new generation of Viper (i.e. Gen I, Gen II, etc..) and then the following year (or in some cases 2 years later) the next generation Corvette comes out and it has several body panels that look JUST like the Viper. GM can’t design anything on their own. They’ve been copying Dodge design engineers since 1992.

        1. The C7 is such a good all around performance car that it directly led to the demise of the Viper. Nobody bought one. It took everything to sell 485 cars in 2017. The Viper is a one trick pony and the Vette squashed, steamrolled and wiped it out clean because it is a superior car.

The time you quote isn’t for a stock car but a modified ACR. Take your lies elsewhere along with your glorified kit car.
