This Is The 2014 Chevy Corvette C7 Stingray

After months, nay, years of anticipation, spy photos, renderings, and speculation — Chevrolet today unveiled the all-new 2014 Corvette.

Stingray Makes A Comeback

As expected, Chevy’s new supercar reintroduces the storied Stingray designation as the standard model.

“Stingray is one of the hallowed names in automotive history,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design. “We knew we couldn’t use the Stingray name unless the new car truly lived up to the legacy. The result is a new Corvette Stingray that breaks from tradition, while remaining instantly recognizable as a Corvette the world over.”

Most Powerful, Capable, Fuel Efficient Corvette Ever

The 2014 Corvette is the most powerful standard model Corvette ever, making an estimated 450 horsepower (335 kW) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 Nm). It is also the most capable Corvette ever — being able to launch from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds and achieve more than 1g in cornering grip.

Far from being a sloppy hog, the 2014 Corvette Stingray is also expected to be the most fuel efficient Corvette by exceeding more than the EPA-estimated 26 MPG seen on the current-generation Corvette C6.

It Really Is All-New

The 2014 Corvette Stingray features an all-new frame structure and chassis, a new powertrain and supporting technologies, and — as if you haven’t already noticed — all-new exterior and interior designs.

Highlights of the new model include:

  • An interior that includes real carbon fiber, aluminum and hand-wrapped leather materials, two new seat choices – each featuring a lightweight magnesium frame for exceptional support – and dual eight-inch configurable driver/infotainment screens.
  • Advanced driver technologies, including a five-position Drive Mode Selector that tailors 12 vehicle attributes to the fit the driver’s environment and a new seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Matching that anticipates gear selections and matches engine speed for perfect shifts every time.
  • An all-new 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine combines advanced technologies, including direct injection, Active Fuel Management, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system that delivers more power while using less fuel.
  • Lightweight materials, including a carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel; composite fenders, doors and rear quarter panels; carbon-nano composite underbody panels and a new aluminum frame help shift weight rearward for an optimal 50/50 weight balance that supports a world-class power-to-weight ratio.
  • A sculptured exterior features advanced high-intensity discharge and light-emitting diode lighting and racing-proven aerodynamics that balance low drag for efficiency and performance elements for improved stability and track capability.
  • Track-capable Z51 Performance Package including: an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, as well as a unique aero package that further improves high-speed stability.

In fact, the 2014 model is so new that it shares only two parts with the current generation Corvette C6.

On Sale Q3 2013, Built At Bowling Green, KY

The all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe will go on sale in the third quarter of 2013. It will be built at GM’s Bowling Green plant in Kentucky, which recently received a $131-million upgrade to build the C7. $52 millio of that $131,000,000 was allocated for a new body shop to manufacture the aluminum frame in-house for the very first time.

Overall, right now, I would give it an A-, maybe a B+. If the price hasn’t jumped too much I think they’ll sell well.

It is gorgeous inside and out, GM well done, congratulations. If it drives like the specs say it should, wow! Such an amazing progression for Corvette. It is certainly evolutionary, but what a jump it has made.

This looks like a world-class super car, yet I see Corvette DNA in it, it LOOKS like a Stringray to me. I see the 1958 Vette in the front and an awfully mean scowl at the back- LOVE IT.

  27. A Quantum Leap ! I was a freshman at college in the Fall of ’62 when a copy of Motor Trend magazine with the ’63 Stingray on the cover floated through my dorm. We went walking through town hoping to see one and eventaully did.. a coupe. The ’14 model is just as stunning as the ’63 was. I have owned three new Corvettes but my favorite was a Nassau Blue ’65 Stingray. I welcome back the Stingray name !

  30. I love it, but I have one GIANT concern… Am I the only one that noticed that the Z51 package includes an electronic limited-slip differential (E-LSD)? It has 450hp/450tq and is a peg leg? I hope I’m wrong here, but if not they may have crippled this thing.

I have a modded BMW 135i w/ about 430hp/430tq. It comes with an E-LSD and although it’s better than nothing, it is just not the same as a mechanical LSD. 🙁

It saves on production costs & maybe even improves fuel efficiency, but is detrimental to track performance (both on straights & corner exits).

Perhaps they’re saving room for the Z06/ZR1, but still…

    Reply
    1. I BELIEVE the electronic diff here is a limited slip unit controlled by the computer, similar in concept to the e-locker on the trucks (or the new active diff on the BMW M5).

  31. I don’t want to hear a single word of bull from anyone who thinks the interior is “old” or “dated”.

No GM interior before, not even anything the ATS or CTS interiors said of GM, have anything on the C7’s.

From now on, we’ll never hear anyone say “steering wheel from a Cobalt”.

The interior colours (red and tan) aren’t my thing, but that dash has set the bar so damn high, I can’t even meausre it.

  32. Stunning in the front and vicious from the rear!!!!!!!!!! this car is gorgeous in every since of the word! What a testament to gm engineering the aerodynamics of this vette was very well executed carbon fiber roof for downforce and light weight treatment the interior is a huge improvement with strides in quality and I love the inspiration from the c4 for the interior definitely American interpretation on exotic style mixed with classic corvette cues…….now for the chevy SS!!!!!!

  36. Better than I thought and just like the magazines showed, but the tail lights! he mags showed the taillights and now reality.ugh I HATE THEM! Pros: more aggressive styling than C6(EVEN THOUGH I LOVE THE GS,Z06,ZR1).Wider is better.

    Reply
  37. I think this car will expand the appeal of the Corvette, specifically to a younger audience, which is very important at this point. I understand using “Stingray” to get people to pay attention to the “base” car, but it certainly feels like this was a marketing move made at the last minute? I also hope they sort out the models/packages before it hits the market? Z51 should not be it’s own model? Just make it a package on the Stingray? Then you can make future Z06/ZR1’s their own model.

    Reply
  38. Wow-this thing certainly went beyond expectations. Imagine a car with these looks and versatility, (a removable roof FGS), and at its price point-you can probably buy 8 for the price of one Ferrari and stay within a hairs breadth in performance. This was a moonshot and it worked big time.

  39. WTF! The six – speed auto gearbox? Hello GM it`s 2013 in case you don`t know. Well, OK it`s not a German or Asian car. . Why they screwed this gorgeous American icon? Why don`t they lead but almost always try to follow?

    1. It’s disappointing, I just hope the 6 spd auto will be an update of the tapshift that you can find in the 2012 Corvette and the ZL1. I think it will be good enough to having fun with it.

    1. Yeah but I guess some of the pontential buyers don`t want to change all seven gears manually. There are some high-end cars with 8-speed auto boxes. GM should start thinking what would VW do…

      Reply
      1. An 8spd is coming, just like it is for the ATS. This car is completely new inside, outside, chassis, engine, transmission (7spd), etc. I think having to wait a year for an 8spd auto is acceptable.

    2. A well designed turbo four would only need five gears and you could skip a couple of those in normal driving.

      Reply
      1. A well designed turbo four would never be found in the C7 engine bay.. really!? an I4T in a Corvette? 300hp tops.. in this!? The 3.6L TT is more likely than anything, and even then having a V6 in a Vette again will make for some interesting feedback from the faithfuls.

        Reply
        1. If the cost of gas and the economy deteriorate to the point where the only viable option for the Corvette is an I-4 with a turbo, then perhaps it’s time to rethink the whole idea of exotic sports cars entirely (what the the old 2.1 liter I-4 used in the old IMSA series that could be tuned for as much as 1,200 horsepower?). However, if GM could replicate what the Nissan GTR has done with their 3.8 liter, twin-turbo, DOHC, DCT, V-6, then such might be tolerable, but not desirable. There are always options, but only to a point. Would I prefer an I-4 turbo within the C7, NO!

          Reply
  42. The reason c7 still has the 6speed auto is b/c the corvette’s 8 speed wasn’t ready yet and im sure the ones gm are buying doesn’t have a rear transaxle version which would throw the vette’s 50/50 weight distribution off and piss off the purists as well..since c5 the vette has had transaxles and their not switching a part of the DNA that makes a vette a vette!

    Reply
  43. Besides..no enthusiast buys an automatic corvette anyways!! 7 speed please!!!!

    Reply
    1. Ain’t that the truth!! As much as it sucks in traffic, I would never trade in my 6-speed for an auto. On my daily drive, that is fine but on a Vette? Not until I am unable to use a clutch!! =D

      Reply
      1. Have you driven a car fitted with a dual – clutch auto box? They are faster than manual transmissions and excellent in manual mode. I fell in love in them after driving an EVO X. But why I complain is that GM,once slushbox king, now has to outsource advanced trannys. Sad.

        Reply
        1. For me, it is not about how it works, it’s about my control of the gears, and the feel of shifting those gears with my hand. There is something primal about slamming your foot on the floor and downshifting into a turn that gets my heart racing like nothing else!! Crazy? Maybe, but that’s how I like it. =)

          Reply
          1. Maybe I`m prejudiced because my commuter is equiped with a manual gearbox. But as a top GM`s model the new Vette should have the best tech packed under its beautiful body.

            1. I completely agree but I would still like the option.

        2. Most high end automatics are going to be faster than 99% percent of people with a manual, especially with paddle shift. The dual clutch is just a lot faster (I’ve driven Porsche’s PDK)

    2. I would, but I’m crazy. Besides, without the auto, the Vette might have died a long time ago.

  46. You guys who are clamoring for 7, 8, 9 + speed gearboxes are nuts! The engine has 450 lb/ ft of torque for crying out loud! And I’ll bet that torque curve is very flat. What the heck are you going to do with another cog or two? How many overdrive gears do you think need? Do you want to be up shifting every 300 rpm? Wise up folks!

  49. Sweet car, but why name it Stingray? I have to stop making fun of cars that are named after an animal, or two animals (Mustang AND Cobra). But if you must, then at least pick one that isn’t a stinky fish. At least Chrysler didn’t bring back its Barracuda.

    Reply
    1. Don’t be doggin’ on the Mopars now! ;^) I agree with Barry on this one. Names have history and if they are doing a good job creating something worthy of donning that name, awesome. If they don’t, well, then they better be ready for the diehards to come at them. And as far as names go, I think this one fits. It is long, sleek, stealthy and sexy. I could use the same words to describe the wild stingray, and both of them, even under all that beauty, are deadly! =D

I want to see the other models as well but for me, I am perfectly happy droolin’ and dreamin’ about this one for a while! (Do you think I have waited long enough for that tattoo yet? ;^)

    2. Stingray is synonymous with Corvette style, and this C7 has brought that style back. Cars are named after animals because they have drawn inspiration from their design.
Also, Chrysler is bringing the Barracuda back under the SRT brand. It will be replacing the Challenger and ride on an Alfa platform.

  50. Does it really matter all that much that they’ve brought the Stingray nomenclature back to life after all these years given what an incredible new Corvette they’ve created? This is truly one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen anywhere, and I’ve been a gearhead my entire life. For me, I’m waiting to see the ZR1 and Z06 models. Chevrolet and the General should be proud of what they’ve done here.
