General Motors plans to close its Grand Blanc Weld Tool Center in July 2013 in an effort to consolidate operations. The facility currently employs 343 employees, of which 323 are hourly and 28 are salaried.
The workers, who were notified of the shut down this morning, will be offered positions at Flint Tool and Die, Warren Tech Center and the Parma Metal Center in Ohio, according to GM Spokesman Tom Wickham.
The General reported Grand Blanc was responsible for $9.7 million in payroll taxes and $866,000 in property taxes in 2011. According to Wickham, GM has no plans to use the facility for other operations in the immediate future.
Perhaps the most exciting element of this development is the fact that the 70 year-old location was used to build tanks.
