Compact Crossover For Cadillac Well Underway

The men and women of Cadillac are currently developing a crossover that will slot in beneath the SRX in the grand pecking order of the lineup. The global vice president of Cadillac, Bob Ferguson said “I spent 7 o’clock till noon today at the design center on that subject,” in a report from Automotive News. And while we’ve reported on the upcoming vehicle’s development before, it’s good to know it’s still on track.

The new crossover is supposed to be a little “younger” and “more urban” than the mid-sized SRX, which competes with the Lexus RX350, BMW X5, and the like. Expect this yet-to-be-named vehicle to fall in line with a segment consisting of the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Also expect it to have Alpha platform underpinnings. The vehicle will be crucial for Cadillac’s growth in the European and Chinese markets.

    1. The car is in clay and you’re already worried about powertrain

  4. I really hope it isn’t too reminiscent of the Buick Encore/Chevy Trax.

  5. Derek — I don’t think you need to worry… BMW has the X1, X3 & X5. The SRX is meant to compete with the X5, the new Caddy will take care of the X3 and the Buick Encore is meant to compete with the X1.

My point is that the Encore and the new Caddy should be different sized vehicles.

  6. I wonder if this will be along the lines of the ULC. Fingers crossed it will not haev anything in common with the Encore.

    1. Guys — this will be an Alpha-based compact crossover. Think the crossover version of the ATS, much like the Q5, BMW X3, MBZ GLK, Volvo XC60.

Nothing to do with the ULC, the Encore, Trax, etc.

  7. I saw that, Alex, I was just throwing that out there for the folks at GM (who follow my posts closely, I’m sure), as I like the idea of the ULC (just not the ULC) far more than a small cutesy crossover! If it’s truly Alpha based it might change my mind about them, though.

    1. It will be Alpha, Joe. It also ENT be “cutesy”… Nothing like the Trax/Mokka/Encore 🙂

  8. If its based on the alpha platform it should be called the ARX

  9. ARX doesn’t sound too bad, but I’m betting that they name it CRX just to confuse the shoppers as much as possible who call will call it a CTS or think it’s a revived Honda (CR-X). After all, a smaller Buick Encore sized Caddy should be named the ARX.

I already have to deal with customers entering the showroom asking to see the new XLR when they actually mean XTS. Confusion abounds.

While we’re on the subject, how about ARF? 😛

    2. If I may, gents: the compact Cadillac crossover discussed here won’t be the size of a Buick Encore, but rather the size of a BMW X3.

      I like ARX…
