So, sports. One of the key elements that make any sport great is the drama and passion of a good rivalry. A rivalry like Michigan and Michigan State, the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks, or even Liverpool and Manchester United.
No matter how similar the daily lives of opposing sports fans may be, the fact that they root for the other team is enough to start a fist fight at the bar. Or at the very least, unleash floodgates of trash talk. So to see players from Man U and Liverpool speaking the same words in tandem on the latest United Kingdom-aired Chevrolet commercial, the outcry from thousands of die-hard fans immediately followed. Chevrolet sponsors both rival teams, so while this Sunday’s upcoming game between the two makes for a great advertising platform, Chevy’s European marketing planners should have remembered that to many, sports rivalries are nothing to be trifled with. Absolute garbage – and this is the crap GM paid $550m for!! Unbelievable stupidity
No David. This isn’t what GM paid for, although it is included in the deal. What it really paid for was the stadium/event displays, shirt/jersey opportunities, memorabilia distributions, and TV promos such as this. The goal is to grow Chevrolet in Europe and it will grow there. The focus on that inside the automaker is crystal clear.
Do you watch futbol/soccer?
Wrong. The majority of football in the UK is shown on Sky and is pay per view, as a result viewing figures rarely exceed 2m per match – these will be the only people who will see the stadium / event displays other than fans travelling to matches to watch live, promo ware will only be bought by hardcore fans of the club which usually amounts to 1000s not millions. The biggest audience will be on regular national tv stations and this is where the advert falls flat on it’s face. As for international opportunities these are again limited to Man U fans around the world which doesn’t amount to huge numbers either. And what is worse this is the deal primarily for the UK, the money does not cover the cost of other advertising in the rest of European countries. In addition we have just had the sales results for Chevrolet in Europe for 2012 and guess what they are down, be crystal clear Chevrolet is going nowhere in Europe and spending alot of money whilst doing it. Finally yes I do watch football.
What are you driven by. That sounds better than find new roads.
