After a mere 21 months of building its 1 millionth rear-wheel-drive six-speed transmission, GM’s Toledo Transmission Operations has rolled out number 2 million. These transmission types, dubbed “RWD6” for short, are used by the Cadillac Escalade, the Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette, Express Silverado HD, Suburban and Tahoe, and the GMC Sierra HD, Savana, Yukon and Yukon XL. The list is long, and thus, many units are needed.
But the days of the six-speed unit are numbered, as The General has previously announced a $322 million commitment to retool the plant to produce the next generation of eight-speed transmissions destined for rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
