These 6th-Gen Chevy Camaro Sketches Are Awesome

A little birdie (that shall rename nameless) sent us these sketches just a few hours ago. They’re the result of the 2012 Interactive Design Competition held this summer, with many of the submissions being from students of the College of Creative Studies; as such, they don’t necessarily indicate the direction General Motors will take with the next (sixth) generation Camaro, which is due in 2015, will ride on GM’s new Alpha RWD architecture shared with the Cadillac ATS, and feature smaller proportions.

As you can see, the drawings range from modern interpretations of the third-gen Camaro to something entirely new and sleek, with one of the sketches being for the top-of-the-line ZL1 model. Interestingly, one of the slides contains an overview of future Camaro owners:

“The next generation of Camaro Owners are defined by their appreciation for the technical… the distinctly tough American muscularity and image that comes with it.”

The description is followed by the text: “A storied Past, Yet Thoroughly Modern” narratives, accompanied by “The Camaro DNA is characterized by a few features that give its distinct”.

The features the description seems to be referring to include a cab-backward layout, sharp lines, and a distinct three-box shape.

Which of these is your favorite? Sound off in the comments below!

  1. These pics are truly stunning indeed. The rear 3/4 of the first two pics is reminiscent of the 2G but the front end is similar to the 3G. It’s a strange blend that seems to work well. I’m an admitted fan of the styling of the 2G and I’d like to see that carried out in the next Camaro. Not because I don’t think that a modern iteration of the 3G wouldn’t work, but simply because I think a 2G remake is chronologically sure, since this current one has so much 1G in it.

    1. Ooops. Typo. That should have read:

      “…but simply because I think a 2G remake is chronologically DUE,…”

  2. Not so much. Looks like they took parts from old Camaros and put them together. 2010 roof and doors, ’82 nose and ’79 rear.

  3. The front end reminds me of the IROC-Z models.. Back in the late 80’s.. Thats the vibe I get from that.. What if they just did something totally different instead having styling from early models.. I would welcome that with a new light weight chassis..

  4. First one on the left looks too much like the 95-96 camaro

  5. As a Gen 5 owner, I and previous gen 3 owner I was sold by the looks, I love the 69 Camaro and the 5th gen to me is a work of art that I can drive. It’s modern and muscular and it proudly shows its roots, the best of both worlds that is perfectly executed.
So I can’t see a damm thing when I back up
but its part of the package, the solution on the 2012,13 is a back up camera.. and that’s what I like about this car, they see a problem and offer a solution the next model year.
Chevy finds it’s self facing a crossroads, but they have chosen the path to pursue.
we won’t know until later when spy pictures leak out, of the path they chosen, keep the retro look, or do something completely new.
The Previous generations have all shared certain styling cues that have evolved but are all genetically Camaro, I like the Camaro DNA badge as it symbolizes the progression, evolution and history of the car. The drawings while excellent and well thought out are just a glimpse of what might be.
As you can tell I’m a huge Camaro fan so I apologize if I ramble, Corvette fans can understand the passion for their cars and their expected feelings about the C7 that will soon be revealed, there is so much in store for the beloved Camaro in the future I for one can’t wait to see gen 6.

  7. I like the current camaro.. Was a huge fan of the concept since it was introduced.. That bronze metallic Camaro looks pretty nice in the sketching.. But I am kind of curios on how a sleek rounded smooth body will be like if they can do it without resembling the corvette like in the past.. If they can’t than an edgy body style will do.. All I like to see is a light weight chassis and a big V8, they got most of it down.. All they got to do is to improve on it..

  8. I love the bronze rendering on the right. 3rd gen cues for sure but with muscular rear fenders and a more modern touch.

  9. I think there’s something to like in each of the first three drawings posted. Whatever they come up with, a Camaro needs to have a race-ready/don’t f’ with me/parent of a teen girl’s worst nightmare attitude. And it should look different from the 5th gen, IMHO.

  10. Guys, wanted to be stoked by these, but honestly these are not that interesting. They look very student oriented and lack the refinement that would make them interesting. Why would you combine 1st gen/5th gen with 3rd gen lighting

  11. I just hope that 6th gen wouldn’t be as long as 4th gen. I had 2 4th gen, and didn’t really like that extra long nose and seat that couldn’t find my favorite position. My brother borrowed it once and ended up hitting another vehicle in the parking lot, said “sorry bro, that nose is twice as long as my civic’s”.

  14. Sorry, but I can’t let this pass. Can’t people write English anymore? “The Camaro DNA is characterized by a few features that give its distinct” Or won’t the writer proof read before publishing? As for the sketches, my feeling is that the air dams are too pronounced.

  15. I really hope there is sum of the second gen DNA infused with the 7 gen Camaro. The best looking Camaro is the 70 1/2 z28 to me

  18. The DNA fingerprint badge is a really cool idea, each car could actually have a unique badge like it’s VIN, but owners could get matching accessories with their Camaro’s “Genotype badge” like the key fob or other stuff.

Ok designs, nothing to write home about, they’re pretty safe departures and still retro.

  19. Even before reading Alex’s comment, the one car screamed updated Gen3. All 3 look pretty cool. Not sure exactly what the Gen6 car should look like, but the basic formula would be as cool as the current car, but more practical (largely in terms of visibility).

  21. I drove a 1967 Rally Sport, but I don’t like any of these drawings. The front looks too much like a serpent (another Viper?).

  24. Please do not put a 4th GEN nose on it or something that suggests a Pontiac SUNBIRD. My 5th Gen has a very unique design style and stands out from anything on the road. These sketches suggest a very strong merge back into the GM corporate blender. Don’t Do It

  26. Honestly not a fan of any.. The first one def not the ugliest gen of camaros (iroc z28) you gotta be kidding, id go more retro or just keep going aerodynamic like the mustang new front end , tighter thinner lights , lower overall body height , quad center exhaust is be more entertained, A for effort though for being enthusiasts

  28. If those first two pics are the direction GM is headed, I can’t wait. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fifth gen pre-refresh, but just can’t get used to the danged Honda taillights of the new version.

  29. None of these have the muscle and grace of the current car which brought back so many featured favorites of the beloved 69 Camaro.
These sketches appear worse than ones i remember in design school by first year students.
They harken back to the 90s Camaro which was never a classic except in Z28 and IROC form. They also pay homage to the last Gen Corvette.
Neither are as pure a muscle car as the current generation or the 69.
Please go back to the drawing board with new designers.
