Hot Or Not? The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

It might closely resemble the outgoing Chevrolet Silverado HD, but that’s not exactly a bad thing. The look of the all-new Silverado 1500 is different enough in all right areas, while still keeping a dramatic appearance. A fist in the wind. We can also see some traces of Silverado pickups from the 1980’s when looking hard enough. We like the look of the new truck a lot, especially in person. But some of you may have opposing views.

All things considered, is the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado hot? Or not?

  1. Snore. But who cares. It’s a truck – a tool. Who gets excited when Craftsman comes up with a new hammer?

    1. I kind of get excited when Craftsman makes a new tool…

  2. Yep, its a truck… If someone doesnt like it they need to explain themselves… What did you expect ect… did you expect an entirely new design language, really seriously look at the design language over the last 30 years for Chevrolet trucks, what did you expect… After reading and looking at the pictures more carefully, I am convinced these trucks are solid in design and engineering… And the right product for the times…

  3. I really like the Interior, except for the left of the dash board were the lights and controls for the 4wd system are. That’s a hot mess but the rest is very well done, tons of room for gear. The exterior? I wasn’t expecting anything drastic but, I guess its evolution.. slow evolution. One could only hope that chrome fades out of style.

  4. I like it a lot and think it looks a lot better, at least the nose, than the new Sierra.

Yes, it’s more an evolution of the current truck’s design, but it evolves the design in all the right places. I really didn’t like the current Silverado’s design (much preferring the current Sierra), but with the changes made, this is a great looking truck!

I like the more conservative approach. The current F150 and Tundra and even the Ram, to a certain extent, all try to push the envelope a little too far, IMHO.

  5. NOT……I was Hoping it to be More Innovative…….Guess FORD will show us All how it’s Really Done when they Unveil the Big Surprise of their New 2014 F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show!!!! How Sad 🙁

  6. It looks just fine. The thing is with the Dodge, ever since they dropped those front fenders it created a real identity. The F150 made that front cab “smaller” and put a lot of style on it with its dropped door sill and all, also became unique. There is nothing “new” here. I LIKE the truck.
That’s the problem with the Tundra and Nissan, fine looking trucks, but no real identity. This Chevy looks better than those for sure, but I was hoping for more than another brick in the wind.

  7. It doesn’t appear that ground clearance improved which is a huge disappointment. I drive all 3 brands on unimproved roads and the Chevy is always first to bottom out. The design has identity from the 80’s alright, but I’m not sure that was the right decade to inspire today’s automotive design.

  8. I think it looks good! a lot of people are saying that there’s not much of a change……. really?…… if you put the 2014 side by side next to the 2013 there is a lot that has changed! maybe not the whole encompassing body, but lines and bulges like at the fenders then yes there is a lot of change! and i do like the interior its clean! and all around i think they did a good job!! and all the comments that i am seeing on other sites are just the Fix Or Repair Daily and Dodge fans just getting nervous that the new chevy will out sell them!
good job chevy! its clean and looks good! and love the bigger Crew Cab! cant wait to see the High Country!

    1. Well that was my first reaction when I saw the pics. But after a few days the design just has grown on me. However this time it`s the GMC that is hot.

  10. I like the looks, but why no regular cab? I carry coal, wood, furniture, and soil. I have a car for passengers.
Come on GM put the 6.2 in a regular cab!

  11. Here are my thoughts on the new “freshening” of both Chev & GMC LD trucks. It is a little confusing to see Z71 badges & then GM appears to be offering a separate Chevy Z71 like the GMC All Terrain. Our All Terrain is a beautiful functional truck but it appears GM is going way overboard with multi packaging like ford & dodge, KISS. Where are the horsepower, MPG & torque numbers on everything ? Okay, EcoTec3 ?, call it whatever but why can’t the 6.2 be available in every full-size model across the board ? EcoTec sounds 4 cylinder with or without a number. Corvette gets a V8 rename, LS to a LT ? WTF ? On the interior, where is the console a shifter in cloth or leather ? OnStar should not be standard, GM turn by turn nav is a joke. Most of us have smart phones, if you don’t you will have within the year. The whole OnStar idea is obsolete & way to expensive! Again the GMC designers pull a winner in design over Chevy. Again more dignified, professional, classier, except a step backward on the All Terrain grill. The ford raptor has a black grill, who cares, most smart buyers don’t plunk down around $45K for a half ton anyway. Happy shopping with no real specs !

  12. Its a good looking truck, just not stunning.

I said the ATS coupe rendering was just fine looking but it needs to be stunning in the segment it is competing in.

However this is the truck market. Most buyers are not looking for some exotic styling exercise, they are looking for a good looking, functional truck that has the power they need, roomy functional interior and good MPG. So these trucks will do fine.

HOWEVER GM has two models and I think they should have made the GMC more stylish with a significantly different/more upscale interior. In the current trucks they have two different interiors (for both the Chevy and GMC) so they could have done two here.

  13. Had a chance to see them up-close the other day, and they look better “in person” than in photos. The images don’t really accentuate the subtle creases and lines that make them attractive.

  14. I like the looks of both, gmc a little more, when you look at the chevy truck, it looks way more refined than last year. also the fender side humps look a lot better than last year, this is what i expected, still want to see reg cab short box 4×4 , great job !

  15. In my fleet of vehicles i have a very nice 1980 gmc sierra grande short box, i can’t see any 80’s in this truck, any one else see 80’s in this truck?

  16. I think that GM has done a good job on the 2014 Chevy and GMC trucks. They look beefier, but not cartoonish in any way. The interior design is excellent and is very up to date with the high tech look with think better ergonomics. As far as the critics who claim that the designs are not ground breaking or setting new standards in design, I have to remind them that like refrigerators which are square in shape to be functional are never changed radically over the years. Most people who buy trucks like attractive designs, but are more concerned with functionality and mechanical performance, rather than radical styling changes. So, I think that GM made the right changes in the 2014 trucks, but I guess in the long run, sales will the proof in the pudding.

  17. NOT, 2014 Z-71 looks like the ” Princess Edition” next to a 2013 Raptor .

    Reply
    1. That’s because the Z71 is no ZR2.

    2. I believe the Z71 gauges are optional with the Z71, and I like those, as well as the slightly different grille and toned-down decals, but I believe GM has been overestimating the Z71’s appeal for a long time now. I would certainly take one (and I think I might someday), but the small factory mirrors, weak tire and wheels (hidden lug nuts, again?), chrome door handles and chrome molding don’t belong on it. Never mind the truck’s stance or embarrassingly low front bumper. So… it could’ve been hotter.

  18. True that! Let’s bring on the ZR-2 and maybe I’ll have a different opinion.

  19. I like both Chevy and GMC , they are High Tech great looking hard working and fun trucks ,but i like the Silverado best.

  20. the 2014 nose, especially the bumper, is a big improvement. The bumper ends on the current truck are UGLY.

  21. Looks like a mid cycle refresh not a new truck. I will wait to actually see it before I decide if I like it or not.

  22. funny about the mention to the 80’s trucks – the similarity I noticed is that the they have the same ability to completely change the headlights/grill/turn signals/etc w/o changing any sheetmetal (looks like planning ahead for a future MCE). Take all that out, and you’re left with a big square hole to fill in.

Also, I’m very glad to see that both versions of the Speedo show every 10 mph vs some models today that only show every 20 – why show only four useful numbers (20, 40, 60, 80) on a gauge? More detail makes iit a lot easier to glance at your speed. Plus I’m sure the digital display will also give you the exact number, as do the GM cars now.

  23. I like them both.. And I’m glad they made the Z71 like it is.. People are complaining about it not being like the Ford Raptor.. Well last time I looked the Ford Raptor with the 6.2 tow ratings were only 6000lbs.. GM has made a very good 4×4 without compromising its true functions.. I understand the specs aren’t out yet but 2012 Chevy 5.3 z71 3.73 gears tows around 9400-9600lbs understanding they go by SAE tow ratings for 2013.. But all I’m saying is if you like the Raptor that’s find but I like a truck that I know I can tow boat and a trailer to the lake for the summer and still go off road with plenty of confidence that I can go through something.. Unless your going over sand dunes and doing baja racing the Z71 is just fine..

  24. I like the pictures of the truck but will have to wait and see it in person to make a final judgement. As for innovation I believe that we haven’t seen the true innovation of the truck until the magazines get their hands on the truck. Especially waiting to see the numbers on all of the new engines and the fuel economy numbers on the new engine mated with the six speed tranny. As far as the Intellilink is I will have to get my hands on it to pass judgement. I am definitely interested in the new trucks. Can’t wait to test drive a few.

  25. I think these new truck have to grow on you like any other new design. I like the GMC in some aspects and the Chevy in others. I wish they would have a colored keyed option for the bumpers instead of all the chrome. I like the rims that they are putting on but the tires on a “off road ” truck should be more aggressive. The new rear bumper isn’t new. My dads 02 avalanche has that same feature. Why 12 years later is it just making it to the silverados. Now to the inside. The dash layout is hideous! I like the seats and the bottom part of the door panels but that dash..my oh my that got hit with the ugly stick! I would like to see what the HD’s look like. But as of right now I see no rush in buying a 2014. I think I’ll keep my 07 2500 for a few more years unless I jump ship to a ford before then.

  26. NO! Just plain ugly on the whole front half and the dashboard. Too little, too late. Sure they’ll be well engineered etc, they are a GM product after all. But they look old! As in some retro ’80’s look. And they still have no console-moumted shifter. Now I say all this as an exclusively GM man, and Chev truck (Silverado/Avalanche) man in particular. I love and support GM. But this new Silverado is a big fail in my books. May be holding on to my ’10 Silverado LTZ Z71 for a while….or off to Dodge.

  28. I think they have done a great job with both trucks, with one exception. GM should have had the 8 speed automatic ready in time for the reveal. As far as the design, there is an invisible major design change with both trucks, all of the aerodynamics work that GM put into them. If you do a search for the 2014 Chevrolet Siverado aerodynamics, you will find that bumper to bumper GM worked the entire structure, fron the front end, to the hood, roof doors, box, and tailgate, with it’s little mini spoiler(look again closely), for aerodynamic advantage. It will be intersting to see the improvement in the drag coefficiecy, and the fuel economy. Then it will be intersting to see the further improvements in fuel economy and performance with the 8 speed automatic.
