Cadillac Teases 2014 ELR Plug-In Coupe Ahead Of Detroit Auto Show

When rumors swirled early this year that we wouldn’t see the production version of the Cadillac ELR until next year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, we were skeptical. It just seemed too far out. And go figure, our gut instincts were on point once again, as the Wreath and Crest just released a teaser photo of the ELR prior to the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

From what we can tell, the ELR is basically a Cadillac Converj with functional mirrors. This means two doors, the latest Voltec plug-in powertrain, front-wheel-drive, and a design that would make an F-117 Nighthawk blush. It should make a great rival to the BMW i8, and command a higher sticker price than the Chevrolet Volt — but not as much as the Tesla Model S. We’ve definitely been looking forward to the ELR’s unveiling, but we think it’s safe to say that it will not steal the show from the 2014 Corvette C7.

  1. Heres hoping for a more powerful Voltec engine to further differentiate itself from the Volt.

  2. I don’t know why they didn’t indroduce this car in LA, where GM was unusually quiet this year. Aren’t they supposed to have the CTS intro in Detroit too?

  4. I am scratching my head on this one, Ok I get the need for a high end commuter 2 door with Voltec; but something that looks like a coss between the last generation toyota celica and a chevy cobalt coupe ehhhhh… Sorry nothing about this is exciting, especially for a Cadilac…

  6. I wonder if someone will make a negative photo of this like they did with the ATS, to show off the body lines that are currently shadowed.

  8. No doubt this is a cool car. Waiting to see how well it will sell though, given a high price and 2 doors. Like Matt, I’m also wondering if the CTS unveiling will debut a new twin turbo V6. Not so sure, as all powertrain things seem to be getting delayed a lot.

  11. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that GM/Cadillac won’t dissapoint us and this will be more than a Volt with Cadillac styling and two less doors.

Honestly, I’d much rather see the next CTS or Escalade, that Glamour concept, or even an ATS coupe concept before this.

    1. CJ — this will be more than a Volt with Cadillac cues.

But the most important part here is the fact that this is the second production Voltec-powered vehicle, improving economies of scale to the powertrain.
