SAIC-GM-Wuling announced today that it will build a third manufacturing base in Chongqing Municipality, in the middle of China, in order to meet growing demand. This news follows last week’s announcement of a 2-million-square-meter production base dedicated to Baojun vehicles.
The first portion of the plant is scheduled to open in 2015 and will cost as much as RMB 6.6 billion ($963 million). The joint venture between GM Shanghai, SAIC and Wuling Motors should begin construction of the new facility next year.
SGMW isn’t disclosing which vehicles will be built at the future plant, but did say that the facility will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles and engines, and will adopt all of GM’s global manufacturing standards.
