Cadillac ATS Wins ‘Luxury Car Of The Year’ Award From Popular Mechanics

The Cadillac ATS has received high marks from critics since its launch, citing what can be described as the best handling car in the compact luxury segment. In other words, it out-BMWs the BMW 3-Series. That’s saying a lot, and it was enough to impress the editors at Popular Mechanics — who cover everything from cars to hedge trimmers — which crowned the ATS their 2012 Luxury Car of the Year.

The model that wooed them the most seemed to be the range-topping 321-horse V6 model complete with magnetic ride control, hard-core Brembo brakes, and CUE infotainment. Sounds like a winner to us as well.

  1. I believe that this is the first time I have heard any publication say that the V6 is the version to have.

    1. That’s because they’ve all been too busy driving the turbocharged model with a manual.

      1. Does any variant of the ATS come with paddles or is it all triptronic via the shift gate?

        1. I’ve heard the opposite… all the reviews I’ve read say that they prefer the 3.6L to the 2.0t.

Also, yes, paddle shifters are optional or “standard” with certain trim levels.

I just wish the 3.6L could be had with a manual. After reading all of the reviews about how great the automatic trans is, I found it underwhelming when I drove it. Nothing beats a manual…

  2. The 3.6 is smoother n faster n sounds better, the 2.0t gets mixed reviews some say its loud n noisy n has lots of lag some say it has almost no lag and is one of the best sounding turbo 4’s they heard.. id rather the 3.6 for reliability

  3. Why am I not surprised to read this news?

  4. I know I am in minority, but I really liked the 2.5….I drive mostly in town, short trips, etc….it was very good for me….Turbo would be very nice also, I’ll see later. Anyway, it is a very fine car from I have seen. It is a lot like the Verano in its quiet, smooth ride…still very much Cadillac
