Accident Watch: Is This The First Cadillac ATS To Be In An Accident?

We’ve already shown you what may possibly be the first Cadillac XTS to be involved in a fender-bender. And today, we received photos of this banged-up ATS.

The shocker here is that the Black Raven ATS pictured only had 80 miles on the odometer and those involved in the car’s future say that it will likely be totaled by the insurance company. Our sympathies go out to the car’s owner, who we hope purchased gap insurance.

  1. That’s definitely totaled…just look at the wheel! That alone is going to be extremely expensive to repair…

  2. I think that one was totaled in the GM of Canada press day at Mosport. We beat ya!

  3. Other than the one Motor Trend rolled on the long-lead program?

In short, a quick Google search reveals the answer is NO.

    1. The first (consumer-owned/driven) ATS… Press is press and doesn’t really apply.

      1. That caveat is missing from your story.

        1. Sure. But that is to miss the point. Media/press does not equal consumer. And that’s what this is really about.

  4. I can fix it, does anyone have any black duct tape? That wreck sucks, great parts car though.

  5. I would like to know how did that happened???

    1. Not sure how it happened. This ATS was being inspected on this lift, and looks that they made a call to total it, it was being picked up by a wrecker.

  6. What is gap Insurance?

    1. Gap insurance covers the “gap” between the car’s market value (factoring in depreciation) and what the customer owes on it. So let’s say this was your ATS and you bought it last week for a total loan amount of $35,000

If the car is worth $25,000 at time of accident, that’s how much the insurance company will pay out, leaving you owing $10,000 on the loan (the gap between market value and loan balance). Gap insurance covers this.

        1. If this were a leased ATS, Ally and U.S. Bank include GAP insurance in their lease contracts. So hopefully the owner can just walk away if the decision is totalled. (Plus, it was a luxury trim – so no 18″ rims, HIDs with the “light beams” which make it so much cooler!)

GAP insurance is suggested if you purchase a vehicle with very little incentives, which applies to the brand new ATS, for a term that won’t “keep up” with the depreciation of the vehicle. Also in situations where the purchaser is not putting any equity (cash or positive trade in balance) toward the new loan.

So if you decide to purchase a vehicle, instead of leasing, and finance for 60 or 72 months with little down, GAP insurance is highly recommended.

Personally, if you don’t plan to keep whatever vehicle you decide to buy for more than the loan period, leasing is the most cost-effective and practical buying scenario. In other words, if you dont run your cars into the ground, lease the damn thing!

I hate long posts, but I hope this is insightful for everyone!

  8. I’ve seen a lot worse fixed. I can’t believe that this one will be “totaled”. A good body shop can do wonders!

    1. It’s probably fixable, but the insurance company may deem it less expensive to pay out the value than to repair it.

  9. Hack shops can do more then wonders, sure it’ll get fix in its next life.

  10. Ya this is not bad of a damage, I’ve seen a lot worse that was repaired by insurance shops. I figure the cost and availability of the parts played a big role.
