HSV (Chevy SS Sedan) Reportedly Testing With Camaro ZL1’s Supercharged V8

News is coming in from Australia that Holden Special Vehicles division (HSV) is testing a special variant of the upcoming VF Commodore equipped with a supercharged V8 engine. Nobody is confessing outright, but the writing is on the wall that it’s more than likely the 6.2L, 580-horsepower supercharged LSA engine found in America’s Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, as the Camaro and Holden Commodore both share the Zeta platform.

This could very well mean that the Chevrolet SS — the Commodore’s left-hand-drive export to America — will be graced with the same treatment: four doors and 580 horsepower. Sounds monstrous. Sounds wonderful.

  3. easy ditch the magneto rheological shocks’ and the wake the neighborhood exaust. if they want tk sell them they have to price it right. how many ZL1’s have you seen on the street? i have 3 chevy dealers with in 20 miles of each other. I have yet to see one…

      The thing with the MRC suspension, in order to keep that power, and beefy platform in check, you need that amazing suspension. The G8, as a good example since it was Zeta as well. the G8 GXP was a great car, but up the power to 580hp and it’s just an engine dragging the rest of the car around, just like the 2013 GT500.
      Exhaust is exhaust, cost wont change much. Plus you don’t want raspy exhaust of a 6.2L S/C V8. a 600hp car at $45k just can’t happen.
      Can’t really loose those expensive tires, and if this 580hp SS happens, it’s easy to assume it will come with the ZL1’s Goodyear Supercar F1 tires ($1500 for all four corners).
      Same goes for the breaks.
      Never, ever, ever sacrifice brakes, handling, suspension but maintain power.
      The entire drivetrain between the SS 580hp and ZL1 will be the same.

      The most I can see a sedan being cheaper than the coupe/camaro counter part is $5k at the top end and $3k at the base.

      Hopefully is comes looking similar to the HSV Commodore GTS 25th Anni Special

        The dealers here don’t even have one in the show room. The fact is the Aussies are testing it for one of their super commodore editions, I think that that won’t be the case in us SS models they will most likely have the 6.2 LS3 variants for auto and manual, maybe tweaked some, I don’t know if chevy would want a 4 door with more power than a Camaro SS. They might be the same don’t know it’s all speculation at this point , the sadly departed Pontiac g8 gxp had the LS3 with 425hp and 415 lb of torque so there is a indication, my thoughts is that the SS will be like a more evolved GXP. A 2009 GXP cost about 40k by today’s standard 45k seems logical but for 60k ? I would rather buy a very well equipped Audi S4
        I’d take the horsepower hit for the Quattro 0-60 4.9 sec.

    2. ZL1 is already running near-straights from the cat. It’s about as good as you can get it without being illegal. And the magneto shocks are a necessity for a heavy Zeta car. They handle the weight better than anything else would.

  5. The Holden HSV GTS costs about $ 82,900 in Aussie money. The HSV Grange ns not much cheaper, they both have the magneto suspension and tweaked LS3 engines.
    I don’t know the conversion for their currency to US dollars but 82 grand is way to much for a Chevy sports sedan that’s Cadilac CTS V money right there. Given a choice I would have the CTS V. And that’s my point Chevy has to make the SS affordable enough so they don’t loose sales to high performance European or japanese sports sedans

    1. I completely agree. Chevrolet knows better than to price a sedan high. If the division were to do so, it would most certainly insult customers, least of all because it’ll be built from a pre-existing (and somewhat outdated) parts bin, from the Buick Park Avenue/Holden Caprice bodyshell and Holden-engineered Zeta platform, to the throaty 6.2L V8. Customers will be so offended that a company as plebeian as Chevrolet would offer a sedan in that price range that they won’t look at the Cadillac CTS-V; they’ll go for a BMW 550i, Jaguar XF or Mercedes-Benz E550.

      And for what it’s worth, the SS probably won’t be offered with the ZL1’s 580 HP LSA, but rather the CTS-V’s 556 HP unit. Believe me, GM will do everything it can to make sure that the SS is not cross-shopped with the CTS-V…
