Opel Commences Sales In Australia, Chile

In the beginning of September, Opel has begun selling cars in the markets of Australia and Chile, marking the international expansion of the brand (and GM operating unit).

In Australia, Opel’s portfolio consists of the Corsa, Astra, and Insignia — segments that make up about 80 percent of Australian passenger car sales. Initially, new Opels will be sold in 17 dealerships, with an outlet in every capital city of every state. Meanwhile in the growing passenger market of Chile, Opel is offering the Corsa, Meriva, Astra and Insignia. According to Opel, both markets hold German cars in high regard, and Opel is using its “Wir leben Autos” slogan in its advertising to underline its German heritage.

Australia and Chile join the latest markets entered by Opel, including Israel, while Opel also said that it will continue its expansions in China, North Africa, the Middle East, Russia and Turkey, as well.

The news comes on the heels of rumors that General Motors might be looking to replace the brand in select European markets. Contradicting the rumor, however, is Opel’s 2020 plan — which promises 23 new or revised models and 13 new engines by the year 2020.

  1. Americans hold German cars in high regard too. They should sell Opel here at Buick dealers. Buick for the luxury cars and Opel for the sporty cars.

    1. So another Pontiac disater?

      1. Pontiac wasn’t a disaster. It just occupied a dying market segment and was then relegated to selling to rental lots instead of gear heads.

  2. If there is no overlap or conflict of models, why not? The Opels (like Holdens) usually look better than US vehicles anyway. GM goes to Germany to tune chassis to European-like handling so just do the whole car.

  3. Wait are they talking about opels that’s in australia selling as Vauxhalls or Opels in australia as Opels?
