General Motors Trademarks “Z28” Name

Sometimes when we’re bored, we don’t clean our rooms or fix things, we go fishing for walleye. And other times we scavenge the United States Patent Office database. We just so happened to perform the latter this time, and we have some news. Filed September 7, 2012, General Motors, LLC filed a trademark application for the “Z28” nameplate. It’s perfectly natural to grin.

Recalling when the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 first unveiled to the world in Chicago back in February 2011, it left many in surprise that the 580-horse super pony car didn’t bear the sacred Z28 name. At the same time, we were told that there’s still a Z28 Camaro coming, and this trademark filing makes everything all the more evident.

So, between the Chevrolet Camaro V6, SS, 1LE and ZL1, the Z28 has to squeeze in somewhere. Perhaps it will even out-muscle the ZL1. Or it may replace the SS plate with the sedan bearing the same name and arriving next year to avoid confusion. It’s all very quiet right now, and we will therefore leave the speculation up to you in the comment section below.

Well my fingers are crossed. I wanna hope against hope that it’ll manifest itself as a lightened and fortified “back to basics” 5th gen. But reality tells me it more than likely a
pre-emotive move by GM to lock down the name for the smaller lighter 6th gen. Either way I hope this aint just a regular renewing of the name for admin reasons.

Who the hell let it expire in the first place? They should be shot. Not to take away from the permagrin of knowing it’s back again for some good reason… 🙂

Don’t forget the “Super Camaro”, the fastest Camaro in test…. maybe that will be called the ZR2

If this is going to be on super camaro, then that Corvette that’s coming out needs to have much more super powers to differentiate

That’s what I was thinking. I think it’d be below the ZL1 to compete with the Mustang Boss.

1LE already posts better lap times than the Boss 302. the Z28 filing could just as easily be in preparation for the next-generation model, but that’s still a few years out, so the move is worthy of everyone’s attention.

you’re right. which makes me wonder, if the 1LE is already the “track/road racer” Camaro, then whats the point of a Z28 anymore. and i mean this from a marketing perspective.

if you have a road and track ready SCCA certified racing and performance option for the Camaro called the 1LE; whats the point of a Z28?

you see what GM did there? they effectively reinvented and canceled out the Z28 badge with the 1LE back in the 80s.

this makes me think that there probably won’t be any Z28 revival before the 6th gen. as the 1LE is effectively everything the Z28 was and is to those who actually understand and know what the Z28 originally was.

Twin turbo 3.6L as a ‘street’ model, 1LE is a track monster, Z28 could be the street car that turns the RS appearance pack up a notch.

Well, they filed for it before in 2005 and let it expire in 2009. Let’s hope they do something with it this time.

The spell checker is more than likely a part of your browser and not a part of this freakin GM ‘SITE’… I wish Spelling Nazis would learn how to spell.

It’s my understanding that the ZL1 was supposed to be named Z28, but GM found that their Rights to the name had expired.
